Gravitating to to low.

I like the wider gear placement for crosswind landings.

Well then I'd get the Cherokee. That's what I fly unless I am taking pictures.

There are many reasons for that, the primary one is for your own safety and your passengers.

I'd recommend that you hire a pilot that flies daily. If you can't afford a pilot don't buy one.

The Piper Cherokee is easier to fly and more forgiving on landings. Basically lands itself. Cessna 172 is nose heavy on landing as compared to it but okay when flying level. Both are reliable. Look around and see what is available and pick the one that seems like the best buy given the flying hours and history.

This.

The biggest concern is finding a small plane with low "Since Major Overhaul" (SMOH) hours. I've always been told you can get about 2,000hrs before having to overhaul again. Of course that depends on a lot of factors, but a decent rule of thumb to keep in mind when looking. I haven't had to pay for a Major yet, but from what I understand it's in the neighborhood of $15k-$20k.

Aside from electronics platform, that's one major reason you'll see such a price disparity between otherwise seemingly comparable aircraft.

I mean mainly you can't just change your interior or add in new avionics.
Also the engines are simpler than a 1960's VW.

Safety my arse, it's regulations that go too far in many ways.

this pisses me off too. It's a horizontally opposed air cooled engine.

I mean if it was a car motor it would cost $800 for the block and pistons and heads.

Yet the aviation industry intentionally keeps GA out of the average person's hands.

Plane engines are like a mix of an old VW and a riding lawnmower. Simple simple simple.

I just bought a F-22. Super cruise really comes in handy when trying to get home from late business meetings.
