Agreed. Stay away from little Italy in the lower east side. If you really want to see Little Italy go to Arthur Ave. in the Bronx. Probably too far, but its authentic.

Going to NYC for our honeymoon in early January... definitely will be bookmarking this thread.

Anyone been to Eataly? Worth a stop?

Its always been crazy crowded every time I have been, mostly with tourists. I have a hard believing its worth the crowds, though some may disagree.

I'm hoping we're going at a time that reduces normal tourist crowds.

If it's packed I'm sure we'll skip it, but would like to check it out if we can.

Best spot for an afternoon drink in the city is The Standard Biergarten in Meatpacking.

As for food I am a huge fan of Pete's Tavern

This. Though I got a Panettone from there last Christmas that I would punch my mother in the face (and yours) if I could have it again.

We had a very good meal at Craftbar, just around the corner from Eataly.

We also really enjoyed Upstate in the East Village. Just use Yelp and/or Open Table for dining, and just choose a place that has good reviews and an open reservation for where and when you want to eat.

I wasn't going to make recommendations on stuff to do, because everyone is different and has different interests - but this is a great recommendation. Generally speaking, if you can't find something to do that's interesting in NYC, I wouldn't know where to start to advise you anyway.

Little off the beaten path but the Radegast Beirgarten in Brooklyn(1st subway stop so not too far) is awesome for day drinking.

Bohemian Restaurant. However, you can't make a reservation unless you are referred by a previous guest. They check.

Yea of course depending on the weather I suppose. We went in May so it was perfect. Great views of the city.

In fact when walking under the standard hotel we noticed a photographer taking pictures. Everyone was gathered around so we stopped to check it out. We look up to the hotel and suddenly a nude model appears in one of the windows and the photog starts snapping pics. No sure wtf kinda shoot was going on but it def. was a highlight

Only when the weather is warm and you can get a seat on the roof.

Also, check out Sleep No More. It is bizarre. Plus, Lady Macbeath gets naked . Get there early for drinks and dinner at the Heath. You will not be disappointed.

I've always wanted to go to New York during Christmas time

We went last year, and it was in the 70s the whole time. That sucked.

Other than wearing short sleeves the whole time (hard to get in the Christmas spirit), we had a blast. We saw A Christmas Story - The Musical at MSG (the dad from Wonder Years was the lead), went to a hockey game, looked at the store windows, Rockefeller Center and the Christmas markets (Union Square was good, the other one by the Library was terrible).

My advice if you go then is to do the touristy shite at odd hours. Get up early, get breakfast and go look at the windows before 8 AM (for example). We did that (nobody was there) and then passed by at 3 PM the same day and it was an absolute shitshow.

Expect it to be crowded and busy, plan on taking your time to do stuff and be willing to compromise on stuff ("Nope - too crowded, frick that") and you'll have a good time.

Book far enough in advance and it's really not expensive.
