They died to give us the right to do what they did. Look, I would never disrespect the American flag and I think for Kaepernick, this has more to do with him not being happy with his situation in SF. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is something his agent advised him to do thinking SF would cut him and get him out of his contract so he could sign somewhere else, but what really makes this such a big deal is the attention the media and everyone else is giving this story.
If no attention was given to this, then whatever message he is trying to make would be irrelevant.
