He's only been with S&WB since 2014, so not necessarily.
Totally depends on his past career stops.

Nope. The last one got a $175k parachute for being on the job less than 2 years after a career of lower level jobs.
If there was one organization that needs to privatization, it's SW&B.

I find it comical that a man is retiring because it rained.
That's an overly simple explanation, but it still captures the gist of it.
ETA: Not trying to suggest it was unwarranted.

It rained which washed off the guise of competence.
He stated that operators kept detailed equipment readings during storms, sometimes even up to the minute readings. Yet this guy couldn't even say which pumps were working. The entire system is broken and I'm not talking about the pipes.

OP doesn't even mention the biggest revelation here.
quote:
"... Information I have learned over the last 24 hours indicate that some parts of our system did not operate as they should have, which is disappointing because it contradicts information that I was given to provide to the public. Our staff was not forthright, which is unacceptable," Grant's statement said.
quote:
"While not the primary cause of flooding, we now know that some pumps were not operational during the weather event and that there were some power generation issues that impacted our ability to fight the flood at its highest capacity. And while maintenance and repairs of the power plant and individual pumping stations is expected and routine, it was inaccurate to suggest the system was operating at its maximum capabilities."

He is retiring because he lied to the public about the pumps working properly.

Like I said, it is a huge oversimplification, but if it doesn't rain, he still has a job.

said pumps were working and immediately jumped to the "it's all about climate change" novella while people were still sweeping water out of their homes

this dude kept his job through employees stealing millions in copper,
employees caught sleeping on the job,
dumping asphalt meant to fix potholes,
a terrible rollout of a new billing system.
it wasnt because of one storm

Retired to keep whatever pension or severance package he has because he was about to be fired.

Probably close to $300,000 a year. He has been in the civil system his entire career in some pretty high level positions.

I wonder why his staff were lying to him?

It seems he is retiring because his staff lied. Either way I can respect a person for manning up and doing the right thing. Hardly see that in government these days.
