Was north Br ever a nice area or has it always been a hell hole?

The road network itself is far superior to that of south baton rouge.
That’s about the only good thing I have to say about it

North Baton Rouge wasn't that bad in the 80s. South BR was mostly suburban or even rural back then.
We frequented businesses on Plank Road and North Airline when I was kid.

It was always working class. White flight happened, Katrina brought in some trash to an already not great area, and it became what it is today.

NBR went down hill way before Katrina. Late 80s-early 90s.

In 1998 the country station asked people on the street if crime has gotten better or worse on the last 10 years.
Most said better and one guy said "I don't go into north Baton Rouge or nothin".

Yes, my parents grew up in N. BR and were able to ride their bikes to the downtown area and not get shot.

My paw paw grew up at the foot of the old Bridge in the 20s in an area called Moncina (sp). He said the only majority black area was Scotlandville and he'd often get picked up and dropped off at home walking back through there from basketball practice.

It was good until the old Exxon plant workers retired and moved out of town. Judge Parker and his bussing finished it off.

There weren't really awful places in cities across America like we have today until the crack epidemic. There were some rough spots in the 70s in US cities but nothing like the 80s and 90s. Technically even today is better than the early 90s.

1960's and 1970's it was a growing area of EBRP.
The area was mostly white middle class workers.
Istrouma High was a topnotch middle class high school with some great football teams.
Some areas such as Hollywood Drive along with Plank Road were outside the city limits as the area was growing quickly.
Airline Hwy from Greenwell Springs to Plank Road was booming with retail businesses building in this area.
Hotel wise you had the Belmont which at one time was a very large and nice hotel.
Delmont Village was a nice shopping Center and full of life during the holiday season.
I-110 was being built through white areas at that time.
I remember when it was being built and was closed where you had to exit at Hollywood Drive.
Occasionally we would ride our bikes on the new part being built to Airline Hwy before it was open.
Yes, it was funny to see a few drunks drive running past the barricades and driving off of I-110 before it was connected to Airline Hwy.
You cannot forget there was a bait and tackle shop near N Foster and Airline Hwy that was crowded on Fri, Sat, Sun, and holidays with sportsman buying supplies to go fishing or hunting.
Fred Parnell, had a shop that he moved from downtown to near the corner of Airline Hwy and Tom Drive. He sold alot of Louisiana Travelers boats, hunting supplies, and fishing to the sportsman in the Baton Rouge area.

Right, old man. There wasn't a big gap between the end of the Great Migration into city centers and the start of the crack epidemic.

And yet you can pay $100,000 to park your car in San Fran. Think about that for a minute.
