My wife is finally coming home in about a week 20 weeks in 3 different hospitals. I will need this for her for a few months at least. Interviewing 2 companies that provide. We live by ourselves and I work about 50-55 hours a week. Eighteen to 20 dollars an hour and time and a half for anything over 40 hours. Not covered by insurance. Who in there right mind can afford $5000 a month for a service like this? I know there is a less expensive alternative out there. I have some insurance monies that will be coming in but I'm not sure how soon. Any help in appreciated.

Wow, prayers up. This is difficult. If using insurance money, then you have to go with an agency, which cuts out a lot of private caregivers who may work for less.

Lock up any jewelry, credit cards, or any other valuables. I wish I was kidding.

Call local nursing school, especially nursing assistant schools, and see if they have students who need care hours. You might be able to get something fairly inexpensive as they are doing it for graduation hours.

Find out if your wife qualifies for Medicaid (means tested) or even Medicare. Medicare may cover for certain diagnoses/conditions.

If you don't need specific medical intervention and it's more of a "sitting" type thing, contact local sororities and find out if they need service hours. This could qualify for something like that. Obviously if you need medical intervention, this wouldn't work.

ETA: If you have an EAP at work, give them a call. They can be a good resource.

I hope you find the help you need.

Hate that, but do you want the kind of person who would accept $7/hr to take care of your wife and enter your home? This would be a case you get what you pay for.

Going rate here is $15 an hour with NO time and a half. All cash.

You didn't say what her medical problems were. Talk to social services at the hospital. They can help.

Prays for you and her.
