Most people on this board and most people in NOLA can't tell the difference between:

Lakeview
Lakeshore
Lake Vista
Lake Terrace
or
Lake Oaks (maybe).

What you talking bout homie... I know the difference. Throw in Lake Vista (Jefferson) and Palm Vista up in nere too. Truthfully, Lakeshore would be my only choice if I ended up in Orleans. Unfortunately, I would be limited to few streets as I don't want to destroy my cars. However, I prefer my lake views from Lake Vista of Jeff.

yeah, but it's not affecting the culture of cities that didn't have one to begin with...

In cities way larger? A city that is ranked 50th in population should not host that many fortune 500 companies

Take a look at the 2015 Fortune 500 list. There are plenty on the list located in places with much smaller population than NOLA. If we have the most "brain power" in the nation, wouldn't that indicate a good talent pool? All I am saying is that there are things the city could do to improve its competitiveness. Why can't it have the great food, culture, and history without the crime. How about a viable mass transportation system or improved infrastructure?

Find me a city with 380k that has a viable mass transportation system. You are expecting impossible things from NOLA

Of course everyone would like more Fortune 500 companies to relocate to NOLA, but that is not likely to happen. We do have many challenges to face.

Being surrounded by water and no room for development does not help and where is the entry level kid making $40k a year going to live?

NOLA is a great city and I'm glad I lived here for 10 years. After moving away you get a jist of whats economically wrong with the city and it all boils down to, no room for development and arse backward politics. I've been in Greenville, SC for the past few months and this quaint city has many Fortune 1000 companies employing lots of white collar workers. GREENVILLE FREAKING SC!!!

That's not what's holding New Orleans or any other city in Louisiana back.

Public transit sucks in Houston, Memphis, Atlanta, and Nashville. All of them are arguably more economically competitive than New Orleans....unless your business is tourism or food service.

They're actually doing a lot on this front. It's a work in progress, but if the BR/NOLA commuter train comes through, then they would have a means of getting people from the city out to Zephyr field and the airport via light rail, and then out to much of the rest of the city via streetcar lines, including the new line down St. Claude.

The biggest issues with New Orleans for companies are:
third-world condition of surface streets
high crime
deplorable schools
high real-estate prices
antagonistic and corrupt local government

An overwhelming amount of the jobs there are tourism based. Put simply, NOLA's economy isn't diversified enough.

Yep. Tearing down all those historical land marks should help though

Yep. Let's just face it NOLA is charming as hell. Besides a few bible thumpers you will not meet many open minded, traveled people who dislike the place. We just have to accept the fact that it's a fun boutique city that is ran on tourism.

I still don't understand why there are so many lawyers in the city.

I think they will have to redo MSY before the train comes. Especially if you want to make the airport an international hub. I;ve seen nicer airports in Eastern Europe and Asia.

today's young people are taught to be tolerant of those mugging and robbing and shooting them, so they fit right in NOLA proper...

If they practice criminal law, it's probably good for business.

Not sure about the others but Atlanta has MARTA and it's heavily utilized and pretty well developed. I agree that is one minor component of a much larger picture.

A lot of people seem satisfied to watch New Orleans turn into a gulf coast version of Charleston.

Well they are building a new 826 million dollar airport north of the current airport.

Have they gotten a commitment from an airline to locate a hub there or is this just MSY replacing an outdated terminal?

Would be nice to see a main line hub with non-stop flights to destinations all over the country out of MSY and have Southwest pushed out to BTR. That would be amazing for both cities, especially if MSY gets a daily non stop to CDG or some other European hub.

I've heard rumors that since the city allowed Virgin to build their hotel in the CBD there may be works with Virgin airliner doing Non-stop flights to London. This would be HUGE! Probably wishful thinking though.
