The cops in St. Maarten that are contracted with the school and/or resorts are off-duty, working extra duty or whatever you want to do it. I gurantee that having off duty cops give rides to ppl prevents more dui's than having cops work a checkpoint.

I always new you were a dumbass. Now you are proving it. You want cops to work extra duty giving people rides home because it will cause less dui's? They are cops not taxi drivers. Your stupidity is baffling.

Now if you said you wanted to take the money spent on check points and make a taxi program I would say that could work. However, you want off duty cops to take people home from the bars. So stupid.
On top of that the laws of drunk driving would still need to be enforced. Your argument sucks just shut up.
And to what you were saying about extra duty. I have no problem with that, however a cop isn't a taxi. They are there to keep situations safe. Not to drive people home.

As bad as this case is, I remember a case that was worse from 2002.
"A nurse's aide (Chante Mallard) hit a man with her car, drove home with him stuck headfirst and impaled in her broken windshield and ignored his cries for help as he bled to death in her garage over the next two or three days.
Chante Mallard said she periodically went into the garage but did nothing to help him. The victim 37-year-old Gregory Biggs would have lived had he gotten immediate help.
When the man finally died, Mallard and her friends put the stranger's body in the trunk of another car and dumped it in a park.
Mallard was believed to have been driving while intoxicated by a combination of marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol. Mallard talked about the crime at a party and ''giggled'' when she described what happened. She also told how she planned to destroy the car and make an insurance claim.
Mallard was convicted and sentenced to 50 years' imprisonment for her role in his death.

If you had read the rest of my posts you would see that I mentioned that as an example of an alternative. I was just using St. Maarten as an example not a USA policy recommendation. I was just simply pointing out that having policies that punishes someone for committing a crime (i.e drinking and driving) is not as good a good way to stop a behavior or crime. Policies that prevent ppl from drinking and driving in the first place is a much better way to go than punishing them after they do it. According to MADD, only 1 out of 88 drunk drivers is arrested. That means that there are 87 or 98.8% drunk drivers that aren't arrested. That doesn't sound like a very effective use of tax payer money ( here is an article from chicago showing how much differen Il towns spent on DUI checkpoints). There has to be a better way to spend tax payer money to reduce drunk-driving accidents and deaths. I was just using the St. Maarten as police as one methos that I have personally experienced and it works great.

I am not saying that they wouldn't, but you could have the on-duty cops do it.

Whats wrong with it? The school and the resorts pay the police department. So it is win-win for everybody.

I understand what you're saying. But since it is so difficult (and impossible I'd say) to actually physically prevent everyone from drinking and driving, the next best thing is to deter people from making that choice themselves. What is one way to do that? Make sure their lives will be ruined if they do.
Obviously, that doesn't stop everyone. But I'd like to think it does help people make better decisions before they go out in drink (ie deciding how they get home if they have too much). Especially before the actually drinking occurs.
