Well, in all honesty, it would be difficult to compare those cities of Mesoamerica and Europe. I mean the wheel was not used in any major way before Columbus, they lacked metallurgy, and most had zero knowledge of sailing or navigation, not to mention gunpowder.
It's not hard to understand how they got wiped out by the Spanish and the Portugese.
Does that mean they weren't comfortable before Columbus arrived- I am sure they were. But don't try and pretend that they were on some sort of equal technological footing.
