I would probably buy an eggcrate foam topper (mattress topper), cut it larger than the opening, and use a broom handle to poke it into place. Or just thumb tack a sheet over it. If it's a rental, it's not worth paying for an adjustable shade.

There have been some reasonable and helpful suggestions as well as some humorous ones, so I'm going to suggest you just quit being a puss and take more sleeping drugs when necessary.

Or get an OT 10 to sit on your face to block the light.
