Nissan Purchases Mitsubishi... bringing back Datsun

$2.1 Billion for 34% of its stock
I hope Nissan reinvigorates Mitsu and brings back the GOAT of all 90's cars, the 3000GT
Or at least refresh the "Tuner car for basic white people" Eclipse

quote:
Nissan Motors announced Thursday that it will be purchasing a 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors for $2.1 billion.
The buying up of Mitsubishi shares will give Nissan a controlling stake in the carmaker.
The move comes just days after Mitsubishi admitted it had knowingly manipulated fuel economy tests on some of its global subcompact models. Intriguingly, the fraudulent efficiency figures affect Nissan, too, as the two had a technical partnership for several years. This meant Nissan sold rebadged Mitsubishi models as its own.
Going forward, the brands will further share vehicle platforms and technology as well as utilize global production facilities. Nissan's CEO Carlos Ghosn emphasized that Nissan will respect the Mitsubishi brand and history by growing its presence.
Simply put, though Nissan surely feels burned by Mitsubishi's fuel economy faking, it needs Mitsubishi's small-car prowess. Once the deal is finalized in late May, Nissan can effectively run full throttle with Mitsubishi vehicles into burgeoning global markets — likely under the newly reinstated Datsun economy brand.

I'd settle for a good old fashion Datsun pickup.
Those little sumbitches were ahead of their time.

Wasn't Datsun created so Mitsubishi could sell cars to the US and the WW2 vets wouldn't get pissed that it was the same company that made Japanese fighter planes?

They were the same exact car..just badged differently under a joint venture by the companies

The Talon (sold by Chrysler as an "Eagle" Talon) WAS an Eclipse. It just had different badges. The Plymouth Laser was the same thing. Chrysler had a deal with Mitsubishi.

My grandfather had one of those and it had a little over 700k miles on it when he died.

Not exactly Dodge, they were Eagle branded.
The Eagle Talons were AWD cars.
Plymouth also made their version called the Laser.

Meh.. There'd be a market for a smaller platform pure sports car. Something that would compete with the Subby RBZ and Scion fr-s

I figured there was more to the talon. I just wasn't sure. I knew they looked just like each other.

Well I'm clearly a basic bitch because I always really liked the Eclipse. Granted, I never would have bought one, but liked them

GOAT...No, 3000's are a nightmare to work on or modify.. not to mention plenty of other issues.
I do however think it's an underrated car..
GOAT 90's Jap sports car for the US at least goes to the Supra hands down.. Factory inline 6 could handle 700hp with ease before having to crack open the motor

Datsun's Japanese production run began in 1931 but you are correct that Datsun's parent company, Nissan chose the Datsun brand name over Nissan when they first entered the US Market
quote:
The use of the Datsun name in the American market derives from the name Nissan used for its production cars. In fact, the cars produced by Nissan already used the Datsun brand name, a successful brand in Japan since 1932, long before World War II. Before the entry into the American market in 1958, Nissan did not produce cars under the Nissan brand name, but only trucks. Their in-house-designed cars were always branded as Datsuns. Hence, for Nissan executives it would be only natural to use such a successful name when exporting models to the United States. Only in the 1960s did Datsun begin to brand some automobile models as Nissans, and these were limited to their high-end models, for example the Cedric luxury-type sedan. The Japanese market Z-car (sold as the Fairlady Z) also had Nissan badging. In America, the Nissan branch was named "Nissan Motor Corporation in U.S.A.", and chartered on September 28, 1960, in California, but the small cars the firm exported to America were still named Datsun. Corporate choice favored Datsun, so as to distance the parent factory Nissan’s association by Americans with Japanese military manufacture. In fact Nissan's involvement in Japan's military industries was substantial. The company's car production at the Yokohama plant shifted towards military needs just a few years after the first passenger cars rolled off the assembly line, on April 11, 1935. By 1939 Nissan's operations had moved to Manchuria, then under Japanese occupation, where its founder and President, Yoshisuke Ayukawa, established the Manchurian Motor Company to manufacture military trucks.
