re: Nicholls considering temporary closure

SUNO needs to close too, but Thibodaux is not exactly a huge town, and New Orleans, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge are not that far away. It has a great PTEC program and a solid culinary program, both of which lend themselves to being a part of a more 2 year focused college.
Nicholls is redundant, just like having LSU Alexandria, LSU Shreveport, Southern Shreveport, LA Tech, Northwestern, Grambling, and ULM is redundant. That area can support one, maybe 2 4 year universities, not 7.
Do we really need McNeese as a 4 year school when we have ULL not far down the road?
Do we need Southeastern when we have LSU and UNO each just a short drive away?
Do we need both Southern and LSU occupying the same city?
We have a major deficit of 2 year schools and a glut of 4 year universities. 2 year schools are cheaper to run and maintain than 4 year universities. We have a shortage of funding for higher education. The solution is obvious, even if it is unpleasant.

SLU has twice as many students as UNO.

I can guarantee that hardly no one from the area will drive the 2 hours to baton rouge or Lafayette or the hour and a half to new Orleans. not everyone wants to move away just for college.

Not important enough to them then.

Without an engineering program

If they won't make that sacrifice for college, are they really "college material"?

Or affordable? What if you live in cut off or golden meadow. Gonna drive 2 hours every day to school and back?

SELU is second to LSU in # of students

Considering SLU is almost the exact same size as ULL I don't see how you could justify closing it. ULL is 57 miles from LSU, SLU is 48 miles from LSU.
Close UNO if you're going to close a 4 year school in that region.

UNO has the only public school in the region with an engineering program.

Then don't go. If those circumstances are preventing them from continuing their education then it must not be that important to them.

This literally may be the most ignorant thing I've read on here in a while.

1.) Move the UNO engineering program to SLU
2.) Close UNO
It really isn't that hard. Yeah UNO may have more programs, or be in a better location(unless a storm hits and it goes under water) but SLU is the better school.

I'm not being sarcastic but is it really that easy? I mean I am sure ABET would have to approve.

You don't have a university for the few hundred 35 year olds that can't move or commute. That's a waste of money.

no, you're going to save your money and go to a college that offers housing. If you don't have the money, join the military and take advantage of the GI bill. If that doesn't work for you, guess you aren't going to college.

Closing a university would be akin to closing a plant in a community. A lot of the local economy is driven off it and politically it's not going to happen. A more realistic approach is to combine schools administratively, eliminate redundant programs/majors within close proximity, and return institutions to original missions. There has been a lot of scope creep over the last 40-50 years at most of the schools.
Posted on 2/15/16 at 12:27 pm to GreenTrout
The point I am making is that if we don't have enough money to keep all of the Universities open, then we need to make tough decisions regarding which ones we can afford to keep. The must all be in consideration.

Or close ul down with mcneese right there by it. No reason to close Nicholls down, with the regions it caters to.
lol. Nicholls has UNO and Southeastern close and NcNeese serves its region much, much better than Nicholls.
