An intelligent agent called Virtual Actor that has both narrative and emotional intellect is under development at MEPhI, expected to be online within the next year and a half. It will have both an emotional and a narrative intellect. It will understand the context of what is going on, as well as unfolding scenarios. Based on this information, it will make plans and set targets. One of its capabilities is to be an actor, a virtual robot playing the role of a particular person.

"Our principal goal is to formulate the basic principles that natural intelligence in the human brain is built upon. Biological solutions are in many respects superior to artificial solutions in terms of their adaptability, learning ability, resistance to unexpected interventions, and so on, and we would like to model these principles on the computer," explained Professor of the Cybernetics Department Alexei Samsonovich.

Ideally, people and computers will eventually have a mutual understanding, in a future when humans will perceive machines not as tools, but as partners and assistants. Computers will understand human emotions and goals, as well as the situation in the outside world.

We've had a good run, but our time here is finished.

I'm confused...why are the nerds creating these things? I don't get it, what's their end game?

They either get tricked by the government to do it, or are in some kind of super-nerd competition

Doesn't matter - I think this is one of the few things that actually can't be done. Nothing created by man will be able to possess true human qualities.

No offense, but I assume you haven't done much in depth reading on the subject. There is something called the Brain Initiative (the successor to the Human Genome Project) that is seeking to completely map out every function of the human brain. And given their funding and credentials, we're pretty confident they're going to be successful. Once we know how everything works, it will be just a matter of time before it's all replicated synthetically. It's not necessarily important that we develop artificial intelligences that are exactly like the human brain, so long as they are relatively close and have the ability to reason and learn. Once they have that ability, the progression of their intelligence will be exponential given how much faster artificial systems operate than biological ones. It may sound like a sci-fi fantasy, but most leading scientists in the field agree that human level artificial intelligence is inevitable. And sooner than you think

What's the point though? It doesn't have to be inevitable; people can spend their time on more productive things.
