Grand Cherokee. But get the SRT8, that way you can enjoy driving it as well.

Ford Explorers can be big man. You sure she'll be able to park that thing? Most women have issues parking Civics, now give them an Explorer and you'll be parking at the back of the parking lot every time you go anywhere

Wow.

Owned both ... I’ll never go back to anything made by Ford. It’s like they go out of their way to invent shittier grades of plastic.

Mom also owns a Jeep Cherokee and she’s never had any major problems.

Just follow the maintenance schedule, don’t do anything stupid, and the vehicle should last a long while.

Buddy of mine and his wife had a Jeep grand Cherokee for 2 years and ultimately had to trade it in after it couldn't stay out of the shop. They ultimately ended up with a Ford Explorer.

2015 explorer sport, great little comfort features, blind spot monitoring, because she’s still a woman.

No issues

Higher resale value and the fuel mileage the ecodiesel gets is awesome . Buddy has one and at 75 on the interstate it gets right at 35mpg

Out of those, Grand Cherokee.

We just had a thread about carbon monoxide issues in the Explorer. If that ends up being a big deal you won't be able to give away that Explorer when its time to upgrade later on down the road.

Diesel is nearly $5,000 more, lots of coin to justify the cost.

Never heard of the Eco diesel seeing 35mpg at 75mph. It's rated at at 30mpg @ 60mph highway yet your buddy gets 35mpg at 75mph?

Transmission is the weak link.

No it isn't. The ZF 8 speed is probably the best automatic transmission available today.

The Grand Cherokee doesn't have any more or any less reliability issues than the Explorer. The Explorer, and Ford in general, isn't the pinnacle of reliability people make it out to be.

Ok, you got an audible laugh with that one.

Present your proof or argument to the contrary then...I'll wait.

FYI, Chrysler puts a slightly beefed up version of the ZF behind all of the SRT cars including the 700 hp Hellcat and 800 hp Demon and they hold up with no issue. You can knock Chrysler for a lot of things, but currently the transmission is not one of those things.

You're probably thinking of the 9-speed that goes in the Cherokees and Renegades. That thing is mostly trash.

Jordan is right about the 8-speed though: it's a Chrysler-programmed ZF 8HP70 which has been the industrywide gold standard of torque converter automatics for 5-6 years now.

Statistically, the GC is much less reliable than the Explorer but overall (not just reliability) both are near the bottom of the mid-sized non-premium SUV niche. The Asians dominate this segment, but if you want a "domestic" the Edge, Terrain and Equinox are better choices. The Highlander is simply the pick of the litter currently unless you need offroad capability.
