Do yourself a favor and drive a little further to Lafayette.

I would pack - one open - the other strapped to my ankle - not inside the old lady's sweater - need those beads.

I think you'll be fine.

Get there pretty early and stay until after the second parade. New Roads is one of the larger, older Mardi Gras parades outside New Orleans. Main Street is typically the best spot.

And yeah, the crowds get pretty big sometimes. Smaller town with less parking means you'd save yourself a lot of hassle by arriving earlier.

Not really.....although it's pretty obvious in New Roads where the sketchy areas are. Stay closer to Main (south of Maggio's) or towards the Church and the parades are a lot of fun and perfectly safe.

The town pays overtime for cops all over the state to help out with the crowds. We've gone for years and never had a problem. Even traffic is better now that they built the bridge.

None of those pictures look like New Roads. New Roads parades are pretty big.

Edit: recognize the location in one of those gifs.

I doubt the crowds will be big. You are only 2 hours away from the Mecca

The morning parade put on by the black community center. It's a very old parade and it's usually very good.

I believe the Lion's Club puts on the afternoon parade. Floats there range from basic to pretty elaborate.

They each have their own King and Queens. I recommend arriving before 10:00 or 10:15 and staying for both.....and don't cross the tracks.

They've been hosting big crowds for ninety something years. If the weather cooperates, it's going to get crowded. Rain, snow, or ice thins the crowds significantly.
