New Orleans Mayor Cantrell considering removing traffic cams

She may propose keeping those in school zones and only being operational during school hours.

She’s doing great things, so far. That includes considering a much needed pay raise for firefighters.
Refreshing after 8 years of Mitch the Bitch.

In crafting her budget, Cantrell said she is thinking about keeping the cameras in the school zones but only operating them during school zone hours -- 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. weekdays. That still would have a major impact on the city's bottom line. Data show that cameras in the school zones are expected to net $13.2 million to the city this year. But the lion's share of that -- $9.45 million -- comes from speeding tickets issued during non-school zone hours.

I have no problem with her keeping them in school zones functioning during school zone hours. In the past 2 weeks I have been passed numerous times by people exceeding 35 mph in school zones, much less the 20 mph.

Care for a trade with BR?
(I thought not)

This would be a right step forward but won’t happen

Pretty much how I see it, unfortunately. The city has gotten use to that ticket revenue to help run the city and in turn not having to tie up the NOPD with issuing tons of tickets for things they'd likely not ticket you for in the first place.
I'm guessing N.O. probably has close to, if not over, 100 of those cameras set up throughout the city. Hell Landrieu set up 55 more not long before he left office.

Won’t happen. The city is getting income for doing nothing.

She did use considered removing them as part of her campaign.
This will be a start to her keeping her word.
From what I’m hearing of meetings with people I’m close to she wants to do right by the citizens. She wants to step all over anything Landrieu started, within reason.
We shall see. Holding out hope for now.

Hmm, maybe she is for the people. Certainly Mitch was for himself

How do they manage to collect that much money? Who is paying them?
I guess she is only partly going back on her campaign promise.

Hmmm..
This could be a battle with the NO council or maybe that is the narrative they are looking for.

I believe she just promised to consider it. I don’t remember her promising to remove them completely. I may be wrong.

I think she actually promised to commission a study to see if they make things safer. If they didn't then she would remove them.
Because all of the other independent studies around the country aren't enough.

"We don't know if traffic cameras are making our streets safer," Cantrell said. "As your mayor, I will suspend the use of the cameras until it can be proven that they actually work as intended."

Possibly. At least the council has their own voice now.
Mitch was vindictive. Behind close doors no one liked him. The council members were handcuffed and rarely did their voice make it very far.
Prior budget hearings were hot air. Everything was already budgeted and stamped by Mitch.
We’re hoping things have changed and everything is given real consideration by the citizens and coucil members.
Like I said, we’ll see. It’s politicians after all.

I don’t see how the city could realistically give up that revenue

Quit wasting money on other useless projects Mitch started.
I agree, they’re giving up free money, so who knows if it’s hot air or what.

The assessors office is getting ready to roll 100% prpty assessments increases throughout the City so if your taxes are $8k they become $16k annually on a 600k home.
Link? Because $16k on a $600k house would well exceed Baton Rouge’s insanely high rates.
