New King of the 'Ring 911 GT2 RS posts 10 sub 6:50 laps

The 911 GT2 RS posts a 6:47.30 on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. It always amazes me what Porsche can do with a rear engine/rear drive platform, 700hp from a 3.8l engine isn't exactly peanuts either for a production car.
$293,000 base, most will be optioned at about $340k and will sell for more for the lucky ones to get an allocation and have the coin.
The laps beat the Hurracan Performante by 5 seconds and the 918 by 10 seconds.

But....it's a 6 cylinder twin turbo. The Huracan is a naturally aspirated v10. Naturally aspirated exoticars are a dying breed.
You could also get a McLaren 720s for roughly the same money as the gt2 RS.

If you didn't purchase a 918, then no allocation for you... super exclusive. Porsche will be making all their limited edition cars more difficult to obtain due to recent car flipping trends.

The only reason to build a NA super/hyper car these days is sound. Turbo tech has advanced enough to eliminate the majority of turbo lag (especially at this price point) and a NA engine can never match the real estate under the torque/horse power traces of a FI engine.
The GT2 (likely) will have a distinct reliability/durability and resell advantage over the McLarens, while built in the mecca that is Woking the Maccas are still British after all.

Formula E is a go for Porsche but being an engine supplier to F1 is still pretty up in the air. If they do start building F1 engines it will likely be in 2021, in this day of extremely complicated MGUs it is almost impossible to be competitive unless you start from day 1 with a new set of engine regulations, Honda's extremely poor showing has emphasized that.

Technically, no. You do have to have a serious relationship with PMNA, dealers will likely be 918 allocated owners and maybe a guy that has bought like 50 911s over the years. There are guys who have bought multiple Cup cars who have gotten allocations who did not buy a 918. PMNA favors people who spend a lot of time on the track.

My step dad has 964 911 RS America. He used to drive it at Road Atlanta and had it fitted with exhaust that vibrates the whole house when he pulled into the detached garage. The house has a large footprint too. 
He sold it in the early 2000s and then bought it back from the same guy a few years later for more than he sold it.
It just keeps appreciating in value.
eta my mom finally put her foot down and made him take the exhaust off after he stopped going to Road Atlanta.

I'm in f'n love with that car. Amazing. BTW, Nick Tandy, one of the Porsche factory drivers that was driving is going to be a 3rd driver at the Petite Le Mans race at Road Atlanta this coming weekend... Yes, I'm going to act like a kid and get him to sign a big arse 911 poster I printed out.
Curious to see what the upcoming Corvette ZR1 will do. It's expected to run sub 7:00 as well, but <6:50... I don't know about that.

That's a pretty good reason!
Most of turbo GT race cars sound like shite, especially the Ford GT which sounds like a dying cow and the Ferrari 488GTE... which sucks because the now retired NA 458GTE sounded awesome. In 2015 I spent a couple of weeks there doing a driving school then rented several different cars to do laps. The best part was getting a taxi lap with Sabine Schmitz in her GT3RS, that was the best $750 I have ever spent and it REALLY put the fast times at the 'Ring in perspective.
Driving the Green Hell should be on every gear heads bucket list and I highly recommend RSRNurburg as they are a first class business.

I've been three times. Drove it in a Cayman S, Mercedes diesel, and Skoda Wagon. It was equally fun in all of them. Unfortunately the costs are getting out hand if you damage something or they have to assist you and will probably just have a pro drive me or take the course next time like you suggested.
