It is weird that people can't do this.

It’s weird that people want to be near their family?

I have kids, I’d like them to know their grandparents. I’d be okay with leaving, but my wife wouldn’t be, and I understand her perspective.

So a suburb of DC? Hopefully the Virginia side. Having lived in the area for years and commuted to Tysons, Maryland is not the place to be. Also, 30k is pretty big to be considered a small town by LA standards. You’re getting towards city territory. Mandeville and Covington are probably the only plausible comparisons in LA, and I personally consider those to be very suitable places. Would take them over Fredericksburg, VA or Frederick, MD or any other of those large-ish exurb towns around DC any day.

1.5 hours is not a suburb of DC. We are out in cow pastures damn near. There’s a hay farmer 30 seconds from my house. There’s an entire mountain between us and DC and a lot of green.

My wife thank god has realized a better quality of life is greater than proximity to family that we can visit. The day to day grind just was not worth it. The roads, the schools, the general trashiness just every day. It was beating me down relentlessly. She never realized most places aren’t like that until she moved. She’s drawing a harder line against coming back than even I am which is refreshing.

live right in the middle of Baton Rouge and both my cars and my front door are always unlocked. Never had an issue. Parts of Baton Rouge are hood but I’ve never experienced it anywhere around my neighborhood.

Most people in Baton Rouge could do this and not have a problem statistically. But this board posts all the time stories about people coming through nicer hoods looking for trouble. This is unheard of where are now. Same thing in Nola, statistically it won’t ever be you, but you hear about it all the time. And maybe one day you’re not so lucky.

I couldn’t even tell you the last criminal event that happened where we are now whether it’s a break in, carjacking, murder, etc…. Just absolutely nothing of that sort going on to the point where it’s newsworthy. And brother it is glorious.

You can compare entertainment too. Of course the city will have more to offer than a small town. Everything is allowed to be compared even if it's skewed. That's what makes city life and small town life different.. Why wouldn't it be okay to compare these things?

Exactly. And we have a great downtown with a walking mall that’s always filled with life and zero bums. The bathroom even takes quarters to keep people from camping out in there. Doesn’t smell like shite tons of pot or stale alcohol either. It’s just nice. Lots of small mom and pop restaurants and stores. It blows my in laws mind every time they come to visit that a small town doesn’t have to be dying. There’s even a public pool and fountain and there’s never issues like in the original post. It’s incredible to have public services that people can enjoy without it becoming a detriment or a drag to normal folks.

I live in Lafayette proper, near the river. Crime is never something that I think of, quality of life is pretty good, and while I send my kid to private school I don't look at that as a "bad" thing.

Brother if you think Lafayette is a good quality of life you need to get out more. Not saying happiness can’t be found in Louisiana. There is just this thick level of day to day bullshite that is indescribable until you leave. It’s stressful for me to go back sometimes because all of that gets brought up again.

I thank god every day my wife saw the light.

What is your definition of "good quality of life"?

I don't deal with trashy people on a day to day basis, the roads that I travel on a day to day basis are good, there's nothing wrong with the people that I deal with daily.

I'm not saying that there isn't trash around, but there are good areas and people here.

ETA: I'm fairly well traveled, I just hear people talk about how the quality of life is "better" elsewhere. My only real complaints about where I live are the climate and topography, the other "issues" can be solved by where and who you hang out with.

Fair enough. It is easier when you go out of your way not to suffer fools. I guess there were just enough that I felt like I was going too much out of my way too often.

ETA: your list on its face is pretty laughable. I don’t think most of those places are considered great places to live nationally. Do any of them have public schools that’s posters would send their kids to? Maybe madisonville I assume is zoned to Mandeville schools? And my wife is from the youngsville/broussard area. We are laughing at that being considered nice. Same with central and Scott with her having family there. Again maybe 40 years ago. But those places being considered nice today is crazy.

You have no fricking idea what you’re talking about

Cool story bro. If you're scared to live in Louisiana, I feel bad for you. The scum of society in LA typically only commit crimes against each other.

People don't want to live anywhere near that crap no matter who's doing the what to who.

Yes, that people cant move on to something better? Absolutely. You can visit and call whenever youd like. It is 2025.

If you lived in New Orleans, I could see this. I lived in New Orleans in my 20's and regardless of your neighborhood you were never really insulated from the trash. Which, I was okay with to an extent when I didn't have kids.

Once this was called out, it went from being about crime to instead being about downtown walking malls and paid public toilets. Lol.

"Better" is subjective. Some people value time with their family over everything else. My kids see their grandparents weekly.

As I said, I would be okay with moving, but I think my wife's desire to stay around family is completely reasonable, especially now that we have kids.

You’re blaming the city because you’re avoiding a politically incorrect statement. The people of Baton Rouge are not violent, unfortunately our ghetto is.

I grew up in Bogalusa. Played rec ball at all the community fields in town. Walked and rode bikes all over that place.

How do you think I feel?

They are probably trashy but also don’t have a ton of crime.
