Hmmm?
As a casual chess player who has done absolutely zero reading about game styles I find that post equally nerdy and overwhelming, hence I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

I don't know pretty much anything about that defense. It seems hypermodern, defend the center from the sides. Apparently it's an obscure defense called Owens Defense. You probably throw a lot of people with it because they don't see it much. I'll look more into it later.

yeah, and I'm not even really a good chess player. I only have a rudimentary knowledge of opening theory. I only started seriously trying to learn about a year or so ago. I think it's a fun and challenging hobby.
Live chess is a street fight. Playing by-the-book variations will get you little when you're 15 moves in against a tactical player.
Learn a few openings that are solid. Take initiative when you can. Make the strong move when you can. Don't neglect your pawns. Don't forget about time.
Best advice out there man, I should get money for this.

easier said than done.
True, and sometimes these guidelines even conflict. For example, when faced with a choice between taking the initiative or protecting my pawn, which should I do? The answer, of course, depends on the payoff from your initiative.
Anyways, I actually forgot to include my #1 rule of chess: Don't make things worse.
It is remarkable how many people go through with an exchange even after they realize doing so won't benefit them in any way. If it doesn't benefit you, don't do it. End of story. It really is that simple, and that advice even works for life, too!
