More likely secondary to surgery itself or positioning. Depending on the approach, they can put the wrist in some slings that can cause compression at that site. While a block can cause some lingering numbness, it’s exceedingly rare compared to the surgery or position itself, especially considering how isolated the numb site is as you are describing it

In a more layman's terms: a kind of mild trauma to a specific site along the nerve, like a bruise or swelling, that will most likely resolve over time.

Take your chances with that experimental crap.

I'd take the J&J vaccine but I'm not sure I've got enough on hand to roll two.

I’m guessing it a cervical block. Not to get too technical, but does the pain/numbness go in a dermatological distribution (nerve root like C5 vs C6, or in the distribution of the peripheral nerve (sounds more like radial nerve). Base of the thumb on the non-palm side? Thumb/pointer/middle finger on the plamar side? Ring finger/pinky?

Depending on what nerves were cut to do the surgery

Maybe retracted, but cutting nerves? Stretching nerves will recouperarate, but it takes a long time. Think in months and not weeks. Shoulder could be a brachial plexus issue, which makes things less clear.

On the non palm side of the thumb along down the wrist to about 4 inches up the arm

Sounds like the radial nerve. Or AIDS, assuming you contracted HIV based on signaling from your wrist position. Seriously though, any trouble with wrist extension (revving up a motorcycle motion)?

Google “Saturday night palsy”. Maybe from the position of your arm during surgery. If only a sensory issue, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you have a wrist drop, I would recommend a nerve conduction study /EMG or an HIV test.

Does the red area in the picture I posted 3-4 posts ago correspond to your area of numbness?

Yes but not the index and middle finger. Mainly the thumb and down my wrist.

Google Wartenberg’s syndrome if only a sensory issue. Maybe from the way they had you arm strapped down during surgery. Ask the doctor for some gabapentin if it is painful.

I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago today. Mobility of my shoulder is on track according to my physical therapist. And some mild discomfort on what was operated on. My concern is that I still have an area of my wrist and thumb that still has numbness and burning at times. Went to the DR last week for the post op follow up and he says that it’s still effects from the nerve block and it will go away. I’m growing concerned about this. I’m showing improvement in all areas except for that. Has anyone had any lingering effects from the nerve block after surgery?

nerves are a funny thing. sorry to say but it will either go away, or it won't. I'd just listen to further instruction at that next therapy and hope it goes away in the near future, it probably will.

Tell you physical therapist to work out the scar tissue.

Then find something to bite down on.

Few episodes of that should improve the burning assuming it's not from nerve severing.

Scar tissue is a bitch and needs to be broken up early.

Yes. Torn hamstring. Sucks. They warned me before surgery, however.

I had neck fusion surgery 6 months ago. Both arms were paralysis for two months.
