How can you legally dispose of mercury?

When I was in sixth grade, our science teacher poured mercury on one of our tables and was batting it around to show its properties at room temperature. I miss the good old days when we could play with elements that were poisonous to the CNS

Microwave it for 20 minutes. It safely evaporates.

Our chemistry teacher did that in 10th grade in like 2004. She just wore gloves and it was on a table with edges.
