Visiting Fort Worth for the first time on Thursday. Final interview for a job that's near the Meacham Airport.

What neighborhoods should I explore around the city? Ones that would be considered middle class, safe, and with decent public schools?

I'm planning on looking at Keller, but initial research makes me think it's a bit wealthier than I could afford.

Budget would be ~$1200-$1500 for rent the first few years then max ~$350k when ready to purchase a house.

You're not going to be able to get a two bedroom for that where English is the predominant language. That's really prime 1 bed pricing. I know you have kids so FYI. If you can do it I'd try to bump that up to around 1800 if possible.

Also, ask for rent specials. A lot of places will do 1-2 months free.

I'll reveal all that if I get the job. I can see some lurker doxxing the hell out of my interview if too much gets out.

Wait...really? Everything I'm reading says Fort Worth is on par with the Birmingham area for housing and rent. I'm paying $1500/month for a 3 bedroom house in Vestavia right now.

Look up north around Heritage Trace and even into Wataga

Also, not sure if it will be too far, but google Walsh Ranch. My company is doing the IT for them and it’s unreal the development that they are doing

It’s SW of where you will be and is going to be a massive build out of homes priced anywhere from 250k to 3+ million. They said the master build out is over 15,000 homes in the next 10 years. It’s going to have its own school district, transportation system, etc

It’s really impressive and they already have homes ready.

Btw, you will love Fort Worth. Great city with a bright future.

Yep!

Unfortunately, DFW is becoming one of the metro areas that the closer you get to a loop the cost goes up exponentially.

Agree. This may seem like a stretch on your budget now for a nice house in the high 300s low 400s, but in just a few years you'll be happy you did. This will be the Plano/Allen/Frisco of the West side of DFW. Home values in established neighborhoods like Walsh will be will see massive increases.

North Aledo area in general is where I would investigate if you wanted to buy right for a 8+ year horizon.

I am trying to mentally overcome the hurdle of understanding my drive to work might go up to 30 min.

Mine is only ~15 now. But I have the ability to come and go from the office as I please. As long as I leave work before 4:30.

I make my own schedule but my closest account is 45 minutes. Furthest is 90 minutes.

0 traffic though.

I make my own schedule as well. My accounts are all over but my company pays me .55 cents a mile to drive so I don’t mind it

I always tell my guys , “don’t worry, I’ll come to you”. Lol

DFW is a massive area. If you have less than a 30 minute commute one way, consider that a positive.

My company sucks for this. We get a flat rate plus 14 cents a mile. I can write off the rest on my taxes, but I don't get the full amount each month.
