Depending on the state...there are some that offer free tuition for Adult students (not immediate high school graduates) pursuing Associates Degrees. If you can do that...you can get the A.S. free, then roll it into a Bachelor's program and only have to pay tuition on the post A.S. studies.

same, the community colleges here are dirt cheap, Tarrant College has recently begun to offer four year degrees and have agreements with some of the bigger name state schools to "freeze" tuition at the TCC rate if you decide to transfer later, all of the core courses transfer

Drafting & Design
I would skip drafting, while it can be good. Go for Engineering.
1. You have to know someone "somewhere" or have immaculate resume. There is a tremendous amount of good people in this field as well, but there is only so much room at the top and so much money allocated in these contracts for staffing. A lot of people will help you find a job as well. "as long as you play the game"
The budgets for staffing are shrinking and in the "small market louisiana" these managers and leads cant afford to bring in green people as well.
2. All the jobs are moving out of Louisiana.
A buddy I use to work with Ubered for a whole year after getting laid off, But then eventually found work in Houston. Im looking out of state as well.
3. This field is one of those fields that "offshore" labor, so what use to be where firms would have a heavy staff of Drafters, designers, and engineers they are sending this work to India, Japan, and other shite holes screwing you out of work. While these big companies get massive tax breaks. And also the engineering as well. I know a engineer, and all they do is "check" the calcs from these other countries, All this work use to be done in house. Now the Drafting and engineering economy has changed.
4. I have been doing this for 5 years, got laid off twice and have been struggling to get back into the field. Ive told some compaines I would work for free for a week or 2, or even try to hustle some side work, they think im nuts. But to be honest most job entries are looking for 8-10 year people. Nobody wants to train anybody.
5. But everyone experience is different. It may work great for you. Some hit a job and can stay in it. If you do get to the top, Compaines arent training anyone anymore, so If you get there, "your there man"

Medical fields are going to be the highest paying overall. Check out Medical Sonogrophy.

A.S. In Process Technology is the ticket if you are interested in working in a chemical plant, or refinery.

Makes sense. I've seen "you" in those films...you get your arse kicked and killed.
Sounds like a furlough would mean you have the option of coming back at some point. Do you want to completely get out of the railroad?

License to fish, hunt and drive a car, now you're telling me I need a license to sing?

I’m pretty much done with the railroad. It’s too unstable and they are closing yards all over. Once they go to a man one crew. It’s going to be even worse.
