We tried allergy shots for about 6 months. Even after lowing the dosage, they made him terribly sick to the point we had to discontinue them. We have altered his diet. That seems to help a bit but not anything life altering for him. Daily we have to give him 2 Benadryl and a Zyrtec. This brings mild relief but does not stop it. I am terrified about the potential long-term health consequences of doing this. His coat gets “greasy”. We bathe him at least 3 times per week using MiconaHex+Triz. We dry him well. That seems to give him mild relief for about 24 hours or so.

Greedy arse vets. Put his arse on prednisone daily. Have to be careful about his weight though.

This will sound crazy but Prozac. Similar issue with my dog (pointer/lab mix) was getting bald spots around his snout and eyes, flakey skin, paws red from licking and scratching. Ears were always infected and he smelled horrible. Did antibiotics, steroids, special baths, special food, apoquel. Finally went away on its own and was then seasonal for a few years. We had a baby, he got really anxious and vet put him on dog Prozac. She even mentioned that it may help his licking/scratching and it has. Hasn’t had any issues since and we don’t even have to do cytopoint anymore. Coincidence? Maybe. But it is way cheaper than the next step which was dog dermatologist so I’ll take it.

I do have a suggestion. Have you thought about his environmental allergies and if he’d do well in another region? I had a lab with allergies that were awful in BR. We moved to the desert and bam, all good. I feel for you brother.

Wow! Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions. I am sorting through them now. Much to research.

As to Apoquel, he was on that for a bit. Worked until it didn’t. He was up to 4 per day and it began causing health problems.

Cytopoint, I can’t recall if we tried that or not. Will have to ask hubby.

Where did we get him? A breeder in Louisiana. Yes, it is genetic environmental allergies. Didn’t know it at the time - despite his allergies, I am glad I didn’t know. I love this dog.

Moving is not an option though I gladly would if I could.

I know I am missing some responses. Please forgive me for that.

Now, off to research. Thank you all and feel free to keep the ideas and suggestions coming.

Greasy coat.....Does his ears stink? if so he may have yeast infection in his gut. Been going through this with our Doodle for about 6 months...He gnaws his hair out and smells putrid. We've tried the shots but they didnt help. Changed his diet to no carb and giving him probiotics and yeast infection drops. I bathe him twice a week with medicated shampoos, and have been using antifungal spray when I catch him scratching and hot spot treatment where he's gnawed his hair out....

You can get a monthly steroid shot for about 25 bucks. Had something similar with my dog.

Where did you acquire these shots? that may be my next move

Adding this infographic to help everyone understand the reality of the pet food industry.
