$75 x 100% = 7500
7500 \ 15% = $500 regular price
$500 - $75 (15%) = $425 sale price
Maybe I’m missing something...

You're correct. 75 is 15% of $500, hence the sales price is 425.

As an MIT grad,
You are correct.
Don’t let them confuse your daughter with any other answer. It’s math and $425 is the right answer as worded. Period.
Edit:
Mark down to $75 makes the sale price and answer $75. Very effective trick question. Not a fan, because this is business math, not law school. Should be building confidence, not creating confusion.

Holy shite people how are y’all still talking about this. The answer has been obvious from the first page. Stop debating the math it’s already been worked out and it doesn’t take the MIT grad to figure it out!

$500 is the original price. Algebraically it looks like this 0.15 * X = 75, so to solve for X, you would divide both sides by 0.15. The left side becomes your X and the right side become 75/0.15, or 500.

OP, I’m curious what the teacher’s reaction to being shown she misread the question will be. Hopefully she will admit it, laugh about it, and share her error as an example of how that type of problem can be done wrong. Really, the teacher will have to do this since the error was taught to the class.

At first I did a facepalm because I thought this thread was going to mirror arguments with coworkers who don’t understand the difference between markup and margin.
Then I realized it was actually worse.

Sounds like it's potentially more of a reading comprehension issue.
If the problem was written exactly as worded here: "A stereo is marked down $75. If this is a 15% decrease, find the sale price?"
I'd need to walk through it with teacher. "This stereo is on the shelf at Wal-Mart. What is the original price on it?"
If teacher says $75, they need remedial reading.

X-75=Y
X(.15)=75
Y=425
425 looks right to me.
X(.15)=75
Y=425
425 looks right to me.

If you don't somehow turn this into sex with that teacher, you're doing it all wrong.

The simple formula is 75/.15=500.
