I have a Craftsman weed eater that's the best one I've ever owned. I bought it for $109 or so two years ago and if it failed me tomorrow I'd still be several hundred ahead.
The key is running non-ethanol gas first and foremost. The second key is to have a head that does not involve a spool of line. I've thrown weed eaters across acres of land fricking with the spools after spooling line only to see the 20' of line spool up the shaft after the engine gets full rpm. Weed eaters are the spawn of Satan as far as I'm concerned. I've come to expect that two years max is a good investment and I move on.

If you are in the Baton Rouge Gonzales area - I have a curved shaft echo that I'd be happy to give to you.

Buy an Echo and you'll never need to buy another weed-eater again.

Stihl or an Echo straight shaft.

I've had my Sthil FS90 since 2006 and I cut multiple yards every year. I think I'll be replacing my current unit with the new FS95 next year.

Stihl straight shaft is the GOAT imo

Get a lithium battery powered trimmer and do your part to save the environment.

Despite all the glowing Stihl suggestions, try non-gas 80-volt. Lite weight and sell your gas can. Read the reviews to convince yourself.

For light residential use the low end Murray is really good, don't use gas with ethanol and don't premix your own 40:1, just buy the premixed eth-free bottles at lowes/walmart.
I have had one 4 years and never had a problem. Starts on first pull.
But if you are going hard core with alot of property or doing professionally, I wouldn't use it.

Echo SRM-225 and a can of Trufuel 50:1 has been incredible so far as recommended by OB a few weeks back:

Had a Stihl that was good until stolen.
I now have a Tanaka/Hitachi that's 10 yrs. old. It's great and used on a 1 ac. lot.

Whatever you choose make sure you use that gas comes in a can.

Whatever you get, use ethanol free gas. Saves lots of headaches down the line. Little tip from a mechanic i know

I have an Oregon battery powered one a few years ago. I have a regular neighborhood yard though, and it does great.
