Witness stated he cut away from the tangled chute in an attempt to drop into the river from height. Ballsy.

So sad. My sister sent me a video of the first set of guys that parachuted down and said there was an accident with the second group.

I didn't ask if she filmed the second one. She was far off so not sure if she saw the guy hit or not.

It is my understanding that he was the instructor on a tandem jump and likely had a heart attack while in free fall. He was unresponsive and the reserve chute deployed automatically; the student survived.

I've jumped with him several times and he was one of my instructors many years ago. Good guy.

As far as the Navy Seal, I don't know any of the specifics but a true total malfunction of both the main and reserve are extremely rare (like it just doesn't happen with modern gear that is properly maintained). Someone mentioned that he was low and cut away in an attempt to fall into the river ... I highly doubt this. Again, I don't know the details of the incident, but as an up jumper I can say that is in no way something that an experienced jumper would ever do intentionally. I'd guess that these reports are coming from people without an experience and have no knowledge of the mechanics/gear used in skydiving.

In both cases, this is sad news for the community and for their families.

I would normally agree with you but local news reports that the body was recovered from the river and they published photos of the entire chute rig being guarded by police in a nearby shopping center parking lot.

This guy was a member of the Leap Frogs so they don't get more qualified then him. I don't get it though since the show teams always open high for the performances. If his main tangled, he should had plenty of time to deploy the reserve. Is there any reason at all someone would get out of the harness? Reserve getting tangled with the main somehow?
