I believe the DQ machines require just a few parts being removed and cleaned, then they pour a cleaning solution through the machine.

Correct, and cleaned everynight.

Fries were much tastier also, with no shortage of salt!

I don't believe I've ever had an issue with McDonald's not being salty enough. If I have any issue with them, they're TOO salty sometimes.

Our ice cream machine on the submarine worked all the time

We didn't need a special technician

I never understood why. It's a friggin ice cream machine. Why is it so complex? My grandparents managed to make ice cream in a bucket that had like three moving parts and was simple to take apart and clean. What is it about fast food ice cream that requires a $20,000 machine and a degree in Mechanical Engineering to maintain?

Probably designed by a committee of Rumsfeld / Cheney types brainstorming "must haves." That's a process that tends to yield a result that checks off a bunch of narcissistic little boxes but is a festering piece of crap.

Why does McDonald's continue to stay with a machine that is so finicky and temperamental? It's been over 30 years since I worked there, but Burger King used Taylor machines for their shakes, and daily cleaning/maintenance was not that complicated.

As others have already stated, making ice cream and shakes ain't that hard. What McDonald's executive is being bribed to keep these Rube Goldberg devices?

If you have ever had to wait to clock off after closing because some jackass forgot to start taking down the shake machine earlier, you know why it is broken a lot at night.

I have lived in another country that has McDonalds. Maybe it’s not the same machine, but I never been to a McDonald’s in that country where the machine wasn’t working.

So, I’m calling this BS.

, but I can speak to their fries when they still used beef tallow, and they were nothing short of amazing.

To be fair they still put beef flavoring in their current fries.

There have been recreated versions to taste for comparison and most people say "similar but different while not necessarily better".

That tends to be the consensus opinion when tried immediately together.

Nah man.

If they use them, they have to clean them. They are very tedious to clean.

I had inside sauces from college.

this ^^^^^^

in my teen years i used to have to clean those things and even doing a half assed job took you over an hour to disassemble and clean it then reassemble it

the managers are the problem. they are even more lazy then the workers and dont care to do their job and see that it gets cleaned. it all comes down to inept lazy arse managers who DGAF

Seems like overkill

The McFlurry has been around since 1997 and has never struck me as some iconic product. Isn't it like a McDonalds (read: shitty) version of a blizzard?

McDonald’s agreement with franchisees also allows them to use an actual Italian machine, sold by Bologna-based Carpigiani, that McD Truth describes as much better designed. But given that its replacement parts can take a week to arrive from Italy, far fewer restaurants buy it.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

There are hardcore McFlurry fans. It'd be new coke all over again.

I don't think this is the case. I think McFlurry/Shake/Ice Cream fans would trade being able to get a what they want 90% of the time for a minor change in consistency or taste.

In the last year I have tried to get a chocolate shake at my neighborhood McDonald's about 20 times or so and have been successful on about 3 of those occasions. And we aren't talking about 8 or 9 at night. We're talking lunch time, afternoon, early evening.

Know what...every time I have tried to get a shake at Sonic in the last year, I've been able to get one. They just quote a ridiculously high price, I pay it, and I get my shake.

Why can't McD's do that?

The special thing about Taylor machines is their proprietary contact mechanism to scrape the freezing cream from the stainless steel barrel with computer controlled temp and pressure to produce, when working, a perfect product that is not icy.

That said, Taylor machines are temperamental creatures requiring more pampering than should be allowed with a franchise service network that charges out the arse.

In Baton Rouge, you pay the tech coming to and from New Orleans time and mileage so it’s best to have several stops on one service call.

People are getting too bent out of shape over a damned ice cream machine.

What was especially pathetic was the part where a womans says it's making her baby cry.

I guess McDonalds is the ONLY place that sells ice cream?
