Or in the case of the OP, the whole.

Does being assholes make you jerks feel better? How is that for spelling?

If you can't take the heat, get out of the O-T.

You guys probably can't afford phones than have auto correct.

Now you're talking to yourself.

This is not an attack at you, but rather a general commentary about today's academic climate:
I find it ironic how many kids are on the honor roll these days when reportedly America's education system is failing. More and more college professors are reporting that students arrive vastly unprepared and unable to think critically. Failing students are routinely passed so as to keep numbers up to receive funding. Many classes are dumbed down to make things "fair."
This is an attack at you:

It's the 7th grade so this will 100% be on his permanent record. I know that when I applied for college and jobs they were all over my 7th grade marks. You should throw a fit.

Does the teacher not realize that with computers and spell check, spelling accuracy is not as important? Besides if the policy is # of spelling errors regardless of how much one writes, then it just incentivize students to write less. Frankly, the teacher's policy is shortsighted and I question his critical-thinking.
Tell that to my coworkers. The grammar/spelling mistakes in emails are horrible. At some point, their teachers probably started letting mistakes slide. If the assignment allowed the students to use spell check, then it's their own fault.

I have a smart phone that knows the difference between "than" and "that."

Your son is in the 7th grade, can't spell, and it's the teacher's fault?

I don't think OP is getting the sympathy he was seeking.

What is the course? If it's English or Literature, that's one thing. But if it's history or biology, it does seem high.

This is sad to me. My wife is in education and she sees first hand how lazy some teachers can be. In this instance the teacher is being hard on the students yes. But I would be that 2 years down the road you looked at kids papers that had/didn't have that teacher and the ones that had the teacher will have fewer misspelled words in papers.
You/your child knew the rule going into it. You would think that the he would double/triple check his assignment or hell maybe even have some proofread it.
I applaud this teacher 100%. Your son getting a 90 instead of a 100 is his own fault not the teachers fault. He had every opportunity to make the 100 but he failed to do so.

I remember when my parents used to try to tell me that middle school grades count

Had a college English course (Ages ago) that was taught by an undergrad. His policy, stated on the first day of class, was a letter grade deduction for any mistake, whether it be grammatical or spelling. I dropped the class that afternoon and was in another by Wednesday. Made an A.

I already have my degrees, so it won't cost me anything. If the job interview were true, then nobody would get jobs.
No, when I'm looking through 200 job applications I wouldn't choose someone that has spelling errors, when there are so many other candidates without those mistakes

Does anyone agree?
No, we want education to continue to be dumbed down. We're not satisfied when people use phrases like counts off instead of duducts.

My eighth grade English teacher made us use a single line to cross out any mistakes. We had to use pen, of course. If you used more than a single line to mark out a mistake, you lost a letter grade.
Over 30 years later, I still use a single line to cross out mistakes. It's so civilized.
Tell your son that he needs to adjust his timeline for writing assignments and add 5 minutes for spell checking. In the long run, your kid will be better off for this rule.
