They will have his BMT Flight information on FB with frequent updates. You will find out the mailing address, important dates for graduation, progress in each aspect of training, etc. You just need to know his Sq/Flt and its very easy to find.
Regarding his treatment as an Airman, he is in the best branch by far. Now, the potential for him to be put into harm’s way depends greatly on his AFSC and the location/mission WHEN he goes down range.
I was enlisted AF for 5+ years. Deployed to Iraq with the Army. Commissioned officer for 4 years. Deployed to Afghanistan. Both jobs were medical.

Leave him alone other than a letter maybe once every couple of weeks. Show up to graduation and treat him to a nice meal and sightseeing around San Antonio.
I was in basic over Christmas after I enlisted (arrived 12/21) and they take it pretty easy on everyone for the holiday...well, easier than usual
He's fine. Probably getting pretty frustrated at this point as he's in the middle of the shittiest part but by end of next week he'll be feeling much better about the situation.
