No probably not. I bet most Grandmasters became obsessive about chess (playing many hours per day; studying openings/end-games, etc) way before they reached Grandmaster status. Which is why you should let him/nudge explore the game to see how we wants to pursue.

What I think is great about Grandmasters is that they see no problem sacrificing material pieces; but when I play, I hold on for dear life haha.

Pretty awesome if you ask me.

Cultivate his talent.

Get him in a chess club.

Also get him some clubs and get him golfing.

Have him go to chess.com or chess time and he can play online for free.

We had a couple of chess threads just in the last few days. The best thing a beginner can do to get better is to get a book full of puzzles of the "White to move and win" variety and work on them. That will teach him to recognize the simple two and three move combinations. If he laps it up, take him to a club, he'll get more help there.

Honestly he's starting too late to be a serious pro, they typically start at 5 or 6 and the top ten year olds are masters or close to it. But anyone can have fun with the game starting at any age, some people take it up when they retire and get reasonably good at it.

Maybe you are just not self aware and the whole time you thought you were a good player you actually weren't.

Does anyone really know that they are stupid?

I'm a reader. I read Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals in elementary school. I was beating my dad and other adults, fairly easily at 9. I never progressed as a club player, and computer programs kick my butt. But, I was a halfway decent casual player in high school.

I would encourage the kid, but remember - today it is all about the opening book - you go to play some of those kids and they have dozens of opening books committed to memory - if you don't, you almost can't help but blunder into one of the memorized solutions.

It helps to play others who play fast on a clock, but still, memory will get you unless you play really unconventionally. But, if he thinks he has a knack, he probably does. Find a local club. The only 2 things you can do to improve your chess is play chess and study games/opening books.

I'm sure this is part of it. The fact is that the majority of people suck at chess. The ceiling is just so impossibly high. Compared to the normal person who just casually plays I'm very good. I can beat fairly easily most people who I might just randomly meet. In the scheme of things and compared to people who actually play club, I'm not good at all.

Booze and drugs ruined my chess game. I used to be good back in the day.
