Dick move but weddings are a waste of money. Invest it or put it towards a house.
A lot of people I've known started their marriage with 50k+ in debt because she had to have some fairy tale wedding.

An $80,000 wedding! WTF.
Anyone saying "wait until you have a daughter", you should have put your foot down and created a budget, but now you're trying to justify it. Dancing, music, ceremony, and food doesn't need to cost that much. Materialism sinfully run amok.

If this is real... It is a bit of an attention whore move. The husband probably wouldn't care all that much, dude is probably just ready to get all of it over with and roll out, but you don't want to look like a pushover, so when you get back from your honeymoon, call John up and be like "dude, what the frick was that shite? You need to think before you do something like that, especially at my wedding. Come to my fricking house one day this week and apologize to the wife, because she was beyond pissed".
He comes over, apologized to the wife. Hopefully its enough so that you don't have to hear her bitch about it for the rest of yall lives.. Then husband goes on with his life worry about shite that really matters to him.. Like, what are the best college football game match-up the upcoming weekend.

Financing a wedding or even paying out of pocket is a pretty moronic thing to do

Would you like to have financial security while you are living though? Even if we are just talking about entertainment I could imagine better things to spend your money on. You could take a trip around the world probably for less money than is being talked about here.

I'd show up to Johns wedding and renew my vows with the wife.

Yep. Trip around the world > big wedding. Go see the JP and enjoy the trip

If you aren't financing or paying out of pocket then how exactly is a wedding going to get paid for? Not everyone's Daddy has the money to pay for the whole thing or is even necessarily alive.

I don't see why it's a big deal. How long does it take to propose to someone? 10 seconds? 30 seconds? A minute? So what if the bride wasn't main focus for one minute out of the whole damn day. Good grief. Why not just be happy for them and happy that something else great occurred on your wedding day?

Did you actually read the text?

Yep. Sounds extremely exaggerated and I don't believe the bullshite part. But, if someone did propose, I don't see the big deal about that.

Yeah but that isn't what happened in the OP.
The bride even said she couldn't hear her husband's vows because of everyone making a fuss over the guy who proposed in the middle of the ceremony.
And they also said the guy and his girlfriend became center focus for most of their reception. It's understandable why the bride would be upset.

If you're not the one footing the bill then you should mind your own goddamn business about how other people choose to spend their money

With more and more people waiting to marry later on life, when they are more financially stable...seems more like the couple could pay for it themselves. It's not unusual for many couples to do this. Especially if neither of them have parents in a financial position to help out.

Man, weddings are too expensive in general. If you provide a service that used for weddings (dresses, food, limo rentals, flowers, etc), then there is some money to be made, but people spend a lot of money for an event that last what? A total of 4 or 5 hrs? People can fly out to Vegas, spend 3 or 4 days there, and get hitched for a lot less. Then use the money they were going to spend on the wedding & put it in some type of investment, a ROTH or something...that will gain interest, but will not tax the piss out of you to take out.

I really don't care what other people do with their own money. I've just seen several friends put themselves in a financially negative situation with weddings and think it's stupid. Me and my wife eloped and went on a honeymoon. We were in our early 30s and house shopping and it just seemed stupid to drop that much money on a party. Neither of us regret it at all.
