Yeah, that is complete BS you have to go through that and coach a 3 year old to pass a written exam to have a prayer of sending your kid to a non-threatening school.

And that is after you get lucky to win the lottery to test in the first place. I agree its unfortunate and part of the reason why even as magnet program parent I still support St George.

There are good public schools in the burbs and the magnets.

Dutchtown is frickin Awesome. My daughter is getting college(applicable at LSU and any public La university/college) history and math credit and she's a just a junior.

And she's not even top 10 in her class with straight As. Lots of local plant engineers' and Baton Rouge doctors' kids there. Nerds.

You'd think they would be zoned for Lee High. I do not understand the school zoning at all.

It's gerrymandered as hell since most of the middle class left after Parker's ruling. The Tara school district includes Gus Young Ave and UClub

What does it say about the school system when the people working there recognize it is a war zone?

It says he should not have put his daughter there. Look my post was my experience at one school and meant to foster discussion on if St George is the only answer....(which it may very well be) not a glowing endorsement of EBR schools.

Lee High doesn’t have an attendance zone because it is magnet. All magnet schools in EBR can have children from any part of the parish.

Mckinley has gifted, great scholars, and talented components. Therefore they can have kids from many parts of the parish but most mckinley high kids are on the traditional path that are in the attendance zone.

Mag Wood Elem is an example of a good neighborhood school in a good area that could be great if families in the areas sent their kids there and became involved in it. Are there more out there?

That's a great story, and my guess is they have an outstanding principal and administration, which doesn't put up with any crap, inspires the kids, and allows them to keep good teachers.

Never underestimate the power of a good school administration.

Some have fallen off quite a bit since the late 80s to mid 90s. Broadmoor and Tara used to be decent schools. Hell even Belaire wasn't that bad in the early 90s.

Deseg killed them all.

Was at the Catholic Broadmoor game a few years ago at Olympia. It was tragic. There were more Broadmoor football players than there were people in the stands, including the paltry band.

I remember when Broadmoor was the shite.

There are some good things happening with EBRSS. Drake has been a solid superintendent and there's emergence now of brand new facilities like Lee, Broadmoor Elementary, Woodlawn just went magnet and it's a nice campus, Istrouma has been brought back from the grave with some renovations and a new football field, so it's not just this abandoned project that's on life support like 10 years ago. Does it have a way to go, sure but they're making some improvements.

thats not the problem. The problem is the EBR School system shipping kids from out of the neighborhood to that school.

Its a catch 22. The school would be empty if not for those kids.If more and more parents from the surrounding neighborhoods sent their kids then wouldn't EBR be forced to either build more schools or add to Mag Woods. Either way you wouldnt be looking at a student body composed of 97% out of the neighborhood kids.

Before the latent Civil War Reconstruction move that went down in 1981, Broadmoor was as fine as any public high school that Louisiana has ever produced. That school for me will always be the "poster child" for the senseless and savage destruction caused by Parker's court ordered desegregation.

Tara, Broadmoor, Belaire, Woodlawn, all good schools. Hell, Central had forced bussing from Scotlandville when I went there. The best thing they could do was get out from under EBRPSS
