My dog is dying. How do I comfort her?

I'm dogsitting for my parents dog (also my dog but she lives with my parents). I brought her to the vet today cause she's been acting sick and turns out her mast cell cancer is back with a vengeance. The doc said my dog may not live for another 48 hours. She has another appointment tomorrow at noon where we discuss the options once my parents get back to town. I'm worried she won't make it to then. I'm giving her Benadryl once every eight hours as per the vet's orders.

My dog can't seem to lie down and rest. She paces around and stands still for minutes at a time. I'm trying to comfort her, but I can't tell if she wants me to leave her alone or not. She already bit me once today when I tried to get her out of the car and I had to go to the ER to have them clean my wound. So I'm worried about bothering her.

I've heard dogs sometimes like to be left alone in their final hours. Is that true? Any advice would be appreciated.

TL;DR: My very sick dog is restless (she won't lay down) and I don't know how to comfort her as she seems she wants to be left alone.

Man, that's rough. I don't know what to tell you except be available if she seems to want your company.

She is likely acting like she wants to be left alone because she is in pain or discomfort.

She doesn't lay down because it hurts to lay down or she can't get comfortable because of the cancer.

This is true. It's time. Spend some quality time with her tonight and then bring her in tomorrow if she doesn't pass overnight.

Prayers sent.

Honestly...unless your parents really want the closure of being there....get the dog put down. It's the nicest thing you can do

Will your dog eat? If so go give it a steak or some awesome final meal. Sorry to hear about this. I hate to hear it.

I know. I might be taking her to the animal hospital tonight. She can't/won't lay down.

No she won't. I tried giving her a bit of rice, but she didn't touch it.

if the dog is still alive in the morning, it's time to do it a favor and put it down

Try giving her a baby aspirin and the benadryl. I think you can use the adult 81mg aspirin. Something to help her sleep.

I agree. In the meantime, do you think it would be wrong to give the dog a very mild dose of xanax (i forgot to ask the vet this)? I know it might sound weird but she has a script for xanax cause she gets freaked out during thunderstorms. I'm thinking it could at least get her to relax a bit.

Yeah I've been given her benadryl once every 8 hours. Her next dose is in 3 hours.

I wonder if giving her a xanax (from her own script) would be too much?

It could be the edge she needs to pass on her own. Dogs don't like to die around their people. Trust me.
