She is only 12 years old, in 7th grade. They took some test at school and she scored the highest in math, now she comes home with an invitation to take one of the ACTs or SATs.

What is advantage/reason of this?

There used to be a slight built in advantage to taking the ACT early. For instance, if a junior and senior got the same number of correct answers, the junior would make a higher score. I don't know if that still applies. I took it as a junior and made high enough that I didn't need to take it again (slight brag)

Looking back on it, I think it's a money making scheme more than anything else. I took it and a lot of my friends took it as well.

Im sure they do track the high scoring 7th graders for scholarships and things, though. I remember I got an 18 in 7th grade

ETA: Thinking back I think there was some sort of state wide award ceremony thing after it, too?

A few years ago when my kid was in middle school they had the opportunity to do the Duke thing, but I didn't see any point in taking it that early. He just took it for the first time as a junior last weekend.
He said a girl im his class took it as a sophomore and got a 36. She's retaking it because her math score wasn't perfect. Goddamn Asians.

ETA: Told my kid he better nail it, cause we spent all his college money on karate.

I took it in 7th grade. My cousin and my best friend did too. Your kid must be smart. We all are.

Is this the same exact test a senior is taking?

I find it hard to believe this is not a 7th grade version. No way they can match someone that's had 25-30 more courses thru the 12th grade.

Sure they can. Little brother of my daughter's best friend scored a 26 at age 12. Not a genius. Just a bright kid who loves to read and loves "facts".

My kid took it in 5th grade as part of the Duke TIP program and will take it again in 6th grade. The only advantage is being familiar with that type of test taking. The drawback is that it could hurt self esteem if they fail terribly. It's only $42 to take the test if I remember correctly.

Nothing really. I did it and destroyed the english, science, and literature section.

Then you end up at nachitoches for an award ceremony.

It doesn't really mean anything other than to help you and her teachers figure out what areas she excels in, and what areas she has deficiencies in. I switched into honors math and science when I went into 8th grade, and that was the reasoning

There were most definitely older kids in there when I did it
