Thought some of you might find this interesting.

He worked for TVA in Muscle Shoals with the National Fertilizer Development Center when I was very young. Around 1988 that work ended and TVA had a lot of chemists with not alot to do. He and others got assigned to projects doing chemical weapons destruction as part of the Chemical Weapons Convention treaties.

He worked all over the U.S. Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Dugway Proving Ground, Hawthorne Army Depot, Anniston Army Depot, Black Hills Army Depot, Pueblo Chemical Depot, Pine Bluff Arsenal, and where these come from... Newport Chemical Depot. Here's a short article about the Newport site. C&EN

The small one is a label/tag off a VX ton container, and the larger one is off one of the larger tanks that they filled the ton containers from.

Decided to make an ornament and a coaster out of them instead of just storing them in a box in the closet, etc.

quote:

"Newport's stockpile has been safely eliminated, which brings the U.S. one step closer to fulfilling the commitment of destroying our nation's chemical weapons," according to Conrad Whyne, director of the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency.

The Newport Chemical Depot has neutralized 1,269 tons of liquid chemical agent VX since operations began in May 2005. The chemical destruction process mixes the VX with hot sodium hydroxide in a reactor, and it generates a caustic wastewater, or hydrolysate, which is shipped to Veolia Environmental Services in Port Arthur, Texas, for final treatment by incineration (C&EN, March 24, page 29). The final shipment of hydrolysate will take place in the next couple of weeks.

The completion of the work at Newport brings the total amount of chemical weapons destroyed by the U.S. to about 17,000 tons, or about 55% of its total declared stockpile. Destruction of chemical weapons continues at sites in Anniston, Ala.; Pine Bluff, Ark.; Tooele, Utah; and Umatilla, Ore. Two additional destruction sites are under development in Pueblo, Colo., and Blue Grass, Ky.

Don't lie, he gave you the containers too and you're currently in talks with Iran and N. Korea

No worries.

We did go see that movie together, though.

Lots of inaccuracies regarding VX and chemical weapons obviously, but he still enjoyed it.

Not at all. Interesting story, text broken up with relevant pictures. No blind links.

Solid thread

Only thing it would benefit from is a funny gif.

Or some titties

Pine Bluff Arsenal

My father worked there in chemical weapons during the Korean war. It may have saved his life since more than half of people drafted at the same time were casualties on the front lines. So I may owe my life to chemical weapons.

My father's great contribution was to tell the army that they had to shake up the containers before use. He went on to be a top notch chemical engineer, though he learned almost nothing from his years in the army.

I did a ton of work at Rocky Mountain Arsenal in the 80s and 90s. That was one scary place. From the VX that was on site to GB and phosphorus agents to the crap Shell left behind the investigation and remediation work was intense. Lots of nastiness in Basin A and F.

You would have been there when he was. Started there in 89 and finished in 93.

And yes, it definitely was. They just buried shite here and there. GB, Mustard, etc

They have turned it into a wildlife refuge now.

We saw some pretty crazy wildlife out there. Monster mulies would roam the area. Saw plenty of coyotes chasing down doe mulies. Bald and golden eagles a bunch.

Yep there was even a couple of lakes the public could fish catch and release. Big largemouth bass to pike and walleyes.

When I first started out there there was only a barbed wire fence around the perimeter and good ol baws would hop the fence and chase cock pheasant. We were pretty amazed they had no idea where they were hunting lol. If you ever get there take the tour. Cool area.

I havent been back to it since 93, but I was out in Denver quiet a bit during that period and got to go to the arsenal a few times with him to outside perimeter area and pretty sure we got at least one tour actually inside. I was about 8-12 during that time.

I remember coyotes and huge jack rabbits for sure.

Been back to Colorado several times, just not to the arsenal. But would be cooll to visit again one day.
