Set it to read AC voltage. Turn the AC on and (carefully) check the two smaller gauge wires on the side.
There is a wire on each side of the contactor you want to test the terminals on the side. With the AC on, if you have 24v there, you are golden.

So like a dummy I changed out the relay and it still won't fire up. Does that mean I need a new thermostat?

Doesn't mean you need a new thermostat. Check to see if the thermostat is sending out a signal to the inside unit. Check to see if you water Pam is full. It won't send a signal to the contractor if it's full

if he got a 24v signal at the relay everything should be fine. OP did you test for 24v at the relay?

A fuse was blown in the blower unit in the attic. Changed that out and has been working great. I think having the backup batteries made it hard to see that the thermostat wasn't receiving any power. Thx all for the help. I probably didn't need to change the 2 pole switch, but the capacitor definitely was bad.
