Marc Brown said it has nothing to do with Bennett or Fraioli. They sold the trademark and a new ownership group are opening it up

Now you got me curious.. guessing chimes llc.. they bought all that land and moved the cottages up by them.. and bought the building.. and lot .. rock paper taco is in and the lot behind it ( old head shop)… Or Hightower and his restaurant empire.??? City slice etc….. Or are we talking tiger land bars scene??? Give us a hint…..
Nobody in the bar scene in BR. It’s a diverse (but small) group of people who have been very successful and want to bring back what was once for many people the premier place to go drink at LSU. This is a passion project. Nobody expects to get rich from it from what I know. It’s a fun side project. With some people who know the hospitality industry, so it has a better than average shot at being successful.

Ben Wynne. He got hammered before he went to Murphys at an off campus apartment from what i remember. . Murphys served him as well though so they got the blame for his death. It was bullshite, IMO, cause the kid did it to himself. But Murphy's was a convenient target to villify.
per an Advocate article:

drinking more than two dozen alcoholic beverages, including a deadly concoction of Jagermeister, Crown Royal and 151-proof rum.
he didnt drink all of that at Murphys. He was on a bender long before he went to the bar as I recall.
And the word was... GHB

It was a fun game if you did it right.

Very sorry to hear about JT. Did he get in to law school?

I wish them well, but I assume those guys are in their forties or older. The original Murphy's owners weren't much older than college age when they started. Are these guys willing to put up with the tomfoolery that goes with owning a college bar?

Murphy's was something to behold.
I am from a small town in south Louisiana. Me and two of my high school classmates and soon to be pledge brothers walked through the doors the first week of school in the fall of 94...
It was shoulder to shoulder, we didn't know but maybe 3 people in there. The bartenders were breathing fire on left behind the bar, girls were sliding on their chest through the party gravy in their jerseys (bid day) on the right, and there was a large brawl breaking out straight ahead.
I looked back at them and said, "Welcome to fricking College!"
Loved that place! Will definately stop in this fall for a game.

The Smiths played at Murphy’s? When was that?

What’s the inflation rate on “dollar Calls”(Wednesday night)? $3 calls? Everyone blamed Ben Wynn, but weren’t they scheduled to close the next year anyway? I thought the Wynn incident accelerated the inevitable by a year or so. I somehow recall the original closing was going to be after the ND at LSU game.

No more need to meet at Sonic. Just throw down at Murphys

pretty sure the landlord was tired of the BRPD issues and the lease was not going to be renewed
the Wynne tragedy accelerated the end of Murphy’s
Murphy’s University Grill next door was damn good food

No.
The drinking age had just been raised from 18 to 21, so they lost a lot of business. They had invested a bunch of money to convert it from a bar to a bar-and-grill, so there would be more sources of income to make up for the loss due to the raised drinking age change. The Chimes also did a similar thing.

That never happened. I was at LSU when the Smiths broke and was afan of them so would've known if they played anywhere in BR or NOLA. REM played at the Bayou in '81 I think so maybe that's what people remember

One night I was staggering out of Murphy’s and sat on the stool at the door for the bouncer…
Next thing I know, a couple are showing me their IDs…after the 5th person, I started charging $1 to get in…made $12 before the bouncer came back…man he was pissed when he found out I was charging people but I had already walked away…good times.

murphy’s university grill was next door, in the old Blimpie’s location, separate business entirely
