Does the natural gas have to run through a pipe or can it run through a hose?

Run a valve and flex hose...

Make sure you have the adequate gas supply. The low pressure regulator may not feed the generator and you have to have the utility upgrade the regulator. Generator Google search will tell out what you need to feed it.

When they to change the meter be ready to add your block valve and tap.

Running a Champion on propane right now. A 5-lb tank gets us through the night and cost about $14 to fill up. The thing I like the best about it is the line for propane is minimal around here. Filled two tanks this morning with no wait.

Right. Most attractive thing is the propane is much easier to come by these days in Nola.

You can order the 100 lb tanks from Costco for $140 including shipping. I got mine from Pelican Propane, $230 for a tank and fill. Plan on getting 1-2 more to add to the Arsenal to keep a week’s worth of propane at the house at all times. Can supplement with gasoline if needed.

Not sure. I need to check into it. I have a built in bbq pit that's connected to NG. I'm hoping to add a quick connect from there.

That’s good info. I bought a 40lb tank in Texas for $129. Couldn’t find anything cheaper.

I bought a Duromax 10k dual fuel in 2015. This is the first time I've had to use it. I've only used propane so I don't have to worry about leaving gas in it to go bad.

I highly recommend an auto-changeover regulator so that you can keep the generator running during a tank change.

I started my generator around 8:00am on Monday, and got power back around 9:30am Friday. Over those 96 hours, it was probably running for 84 of those hours. I went through 13 BBQ size tanks at a cost of $20 per tank.

I ran the cord through my dryer port and tried to let my central AC fight through it. It was a struggle at times, but never was too hot to sleep, and the kids were thankful to have internet whenever the generator was running (thanks EATEL).

I'd like to see about converting it to NG so that I can connect it to a pipe out the house instead of worrying about refilling tanks. Also need to look into a soft-start for the ACs, or see what I need to do to get more reliable 240v output.

Hardware store by my house didn't have electricity, but was filling propane tanks all day long. Never had more than 4 people in front of me, excluding Saturday morning before the storm.

Make sure you have a few hundred in cash prior to the storm.

How are you moving 100lb propane tanks? My only concern.

I've heard good things about the Champion generators also.

I was considering one of Champion's inverters and convert to nat. gas capability, but then I noticed their new tri-fuel option Champion. I am definitely going to look into this one since it already comes with natural gas capability. Anyone have experience with this Champion generator?

Going back through this thread. Everyone should make sure they know that Propane and Natural Gas are not the same thing. The Pulsar in the OP Will Not run on NG. You need a Tri Fuel not a Dual Fuel.

I use this hand truck from Home Depot, it's extra wide and round. It's not terrible to load in the truck once filled, lean on the tailgate on a piece of cardboard and pick up from the bottom and slide in. Really easy if you have help.

Costco sells the 30 lb tanks for $60, not a bad option if you don't want to mess with the 100 lb tanks.

I bought this one in the spring. Runs on gasoline and propane and it runs everything in the house. Have to turn off the stove to run the AC but it runs it. Never had to use it yet though

Again, that’s a Dual Fuel, not Tri. Assume you can get a kit to be able to use NG too? That is one of the highest rated units I’ve found otherwise

ETA: seems like a lot of reviews talk about many of the units have too high a harmonic distortion to run sensitive electronics, and reading several posts elsewhere about fried refrigerators, this worries me. Naturally, the ones powered by Honda engines get the highest reviews, but are also typical Honda top of class pricing.

I'm doing my research and just bought conversion components. Live in TX, but lost power with a pregnant wife for the freeze. And just had family in from LA who were scrambling for generators in Houston before heading home. Made me realize I needed to get set up before the next issue.

The out of the box duel/tri fuel units are likely tuned for specific fuel sources.

The conversion kit I bought just requires an adjustment of the regulator for the specific gas supplied. I'm told you shouldn't expect much power loss. We'll see. Already have a quote for a transfer switch install and already have a quick connect gas line about 20 feet from the electrical panel entrance to our house. Putting a soft start on my upstairs 3 ton ac unit to be able to use that. Also looking for systems that "clean up" the power supplied by generators.

In total, it should be just under $3k for an 11kw unit that would power most of our house safely. The biggest expense I didn't expect was the natural gas hose. Looking for something about 25 feet to get away from the house. Those things look to be a few hundred dollars unless I'm looking over more reasonable options.

This is all awesome information. Post back when you get your entire system bought with details. Hell, if you’re close to BR and find a good installer on the plumbing or electrical side, I’ll steal those too. You are building the exact system I want.
