Every person I see "honoring" him on social media is doing so by posting his quotes and videos regarding race. Seems he wasn't shy at all about bashing the white man for what they did to my people 150 years ago.

Dude couldn't get a meal at a diner in his home town with a gold medal around his neck. I imagine that would eat at you.

When in da fuk did this happen? Not only are they not getting a pass, the white man of today isn't even getting a pass for what SOMEBODY did 150 years ago. You black guys hold them in higher contempt than us indians .... and that is pretty bad.

if Southerners/Americans get to excuse the behavior and beliefs of their ancestors 150 years ago, I think Ali gets that same pass growing up during the civil rights movement.

Are you REALLY comparing the 2? That makes absolutely no sense even if you were correct!!

and he stuck to his convictions. I can respect that in a man.

I can't. Sticking to decisions that are wrong is a sign of stupidity. Stupid deserves no respect.

Thanks for the post. I've enjoyed picking it apart.

He made millions off of the white man. Based on your observations he should have fell in love with them when the money started to roll in and they treated him like royalty.

It is what it is. He was a boxer, nothing more nothing less. Make it what you want, not what it is.

Great observations.

He was an amazing athlete.

He converted to Islam and affiliated himself with the NOI who are notorious racists.

He was a draft dodger

He traveled the world and was at one point one of the most popular men in the world.

As he aged, he seemed to walk back a lot of his rhetoric.

He died a humble man who was very ill for a long time.

Many people were at that time, but often they were more creative than simply refusing to step forward once drafted. The Coast Guard was a popular option as were the reserves. College was also an option for those looking to defer it as long as possible.

With regards to vietnam, is that supposed to be a critique of the man? I would call it honorable if not a moral obligation to avoid that dumpster fire.

The draft, literacy, child support and death. He was able to dodge 3 out of 4. Not bad.

I idolized Joe Frazier as a kid, never liked the way he treated Joe as an individual, especially after hearing that Joe had loaned him money and supported him when Ali needed help.
Philly did Joe bad too, he's one of the greatest ever and they put up a statue of a damn movie character before him.

Bill Burr nailed it:

quote:

“Bunch of fricking losers,” he shouted at a booing crowd. “fricking Rocky is your hero. The whole pride of your city is built around a fricking guy who doesn’t even exist. You got Joe Frazier from here but he’s black so you can’t fricking deal with him, so you make a fricking statue of some three-foot fricking Italian you stupid Philly cheese-eating fricking jackasses
