Ali would have messed with Tyson's head in the runup to the fight that Tyson wouldn't know if he was going or coming, then Ali would have made him look silly in the ring. Ali took everything George Foreman could throw at him. Nevermind the jolly TV pitchman persona, Foreman in his prime was a bad, bad man.

Most people of that generation were to some degree, all races. Ali's fame will endure generations long after he is gone. He's another Babe Ruth as far as fame is concerned. Playful and soft spoken, except post fight. Crazy athletic ability, big heart and stood for what he believed in. What's not to like?

Every person I see "honoring" him on social media is doing so by posting his quotes and videos regarding race. Seems he wasn't shy at all about bashing the white man for what they did to my people 150 years ago.

He seemed to have been proud of his racism. I was never a fan of his sport so I never really followed him, thus, just now learned this side of him since his death.

This isn't really a question as much as it's an observation. It's embarrassing to me as a black woman to see such an iconic person allow my entire race to be judged as a whole because of his and others' words.

Whoa whoa whoa..

I idolized Joe Frazier as a kid, never liked the way he treated Joe as an individual, especially after hearing that Joe had loaned him money and supported him when Ali needed help.

Granted it was different times, and he seemed to be a changed man later in life and realized the error of his ways, it seemed.

Let's put it this way - if Southerners/Americans get to excuse the behavior and beliefs of their ancestors 150 years ago, I think Ali gets that same pass growing up during the civil rights movement. Additionally, even if you disagreed with his stances, they weren't egregious, and he stuck to his convictions. I can respect that in a man.

The problem with judging Ali, at least IMO, is that we apply today's situation to his quotes, speeches, and actions. Read this excerpt, think of the times, and tell me if he's wrong. Remember he is an entertainer so a certain level of showmanship will be expected, and he's speaking to the graduating class at Howard University, so considering his target audience, this is good stuff:

quote:

See, we have been brainwashed. Everything good and of authority was made white. We look at Jesus, we see a white with blond hair and blue eyes. We look at all the angels, we see white with blond hair and blue eyes. Now, I'm sure if there's a heaven in the sky and the colored folks die and go to heaven, where are the colored angels? They must be in the kitchen preparing the milk and honey. We look at Miss America, we see white. We look at Miss World, we see white. We look at Miss Universe, we see white. Even Tarzan, the king of the jungle in black Africa, he's white!

Ali added:

The white tries to show the white as all-good. All the good cowboys ride wide horses. Angel food cake is white and devil's food cake is chocolate.

That conspiracy, he railed, concealed the truth — again, delivered in hyperbolic, almost comic metaphor:

Black dirt is the best dirt. Brown sugar causes fewer cavities, and the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice.

I don't think tyson is smart enough for Ali headgames to work on him. It would probably go over his head.
