Were the plumbing contractors at the new airport local?

From the article:

quote:

a representative for Square Button Consulting, the plumbing subcontractor listed on inspection records, said they simply installed the hangers and pipes to HGBM and the architect’s specs.

Square Button is a local contractor.

Hunt is a globally known engineering and architect firm, but I'm really starting to wonder if they didn't properly respect the unique soil conditions we have here.

I'd bet my life that he won the contract because he's a minority and then he turned around and sub'd it out to one of his buddies plumbing companies.

Wouldn't the soil be helping to hold the pipes to the underside of the building, though?

And if the soil is no longer doing that (because the soil level dropped), then the hangers will take on more of the stress?

It's really concerning these pipes are breaking when relatively empty.

i have seen some projects in the NO area skip back filling with soil and use foam blocks to till up the void. was involved in a project that had 3' of foam as back-fill

Pulling out my Charlotte Pipe Handbook:

6"x 10' stick of cast Iron Service Weight pipe weighs 124.1 lbs
even full of water (3) 1/4" SS rod hangers (spacing at 3' on center = 3 hangers per 10') could easily support the weight without failure.

So Square's company probably did zero actual plumbing work, they simply subbed it all down. Given the size, he probably used multiple ones.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu's chief information officer, Allen Square, is leaving City Hall for the private sector. He announced Friday that he has taken a job with PosiGen, a solar panel company. His last day is April 7.

I want to personally thank Allen for his hard work and service on behalf the people of New Orleans," Landrieu said Friday (March 21) in a statement.

Square joined the Landrieu administration in 2010 to manage the long-troubled Information Technology and Innovation Department, which had been a lightning rod for corruption under now-convicted former Mayor Ray Nagin. Both of Square's predecessors have pleaded guilty to federal bribery and corruption charges.

quote:

Last summer, Square asked for $64 million in the 2014 capital projects budget to bring New Orleans' antiquated IT Department into the modern era. He had described its condition, especially when it came to managing the city's payroll, as being in "imminent risk" of a technology failure.

Square got $12 million in the 2014 operating budget, but nothing specific in the capital projects budget. The Landrieu administration credited Square with starting the city's 311 information service and creating tracking tools for blight.

When Nagin took office in 2002, he hired Greg Meffert to revamp the IT Department. Meffert's testimony against Nagin last month helped convict the mayor on 20 corruption charges. Meffert pleaded guilty in November 2010 to taking $860,000 in bribes from contractor Mark St. Pierre. Meffert's successor, Anthony Jones, admitted in December 2010 to taking $20,000 from St. Pierre.

Square's deputy, Ed Kerkow, will serve as the interim chief information officer, the Landrieu administration announced.

Some of the local media entities really need to consider hiring some of you O-T posters. Y'all seem to find stuff with the quickness.

They don’t seem to have a state contractor’s license. Maybe you don’t need one?

Seems like they are more of an engineering/consulting firm.

For major projects like this, maybe it makes sense to basically hire a mini-GC for different components of the project, such as plumbing?

If you are just overseeing, do you need a license? I don't know.

Think they were bought by another contractor in the past year

Searched "square Button New Orleans" and this came up:

quote:

Search result Square Button, LLC. - Square Button thesquarebutton.com/ GH Mechanical and Services LLC Delivering on-time projects while reducing risk and increasing profitability for project ...

EDIT:

LA Secratery of State Website

I was just about to post that - looks like a related company.

Does GH Mechanical have a contractor license?
