Look for somewhere that is convenient to where you will be working.

I just got a place off Henderson. As Grrrl mentioned, it's a short cab ride from the bars in uptown but still have plenty of options within walking distance. Personally, I like the bars around Knox Henderson/Greenville more than the bars uptown.

I just moved from Addison. Rent's definitely cheaper than uptown, but not as many people our age. I'm 24 fwiw.

Terrible advice.
That's basically like getting a job in Baton Rouge and moving to Kenner distance wise. You would be 30-45 mins away from actual Dallas.

If you move to Mckinney, make it Mckinney ave which is where a lot of people go out in Dallas.

If you are making the move from Louisiana though, be prepared because you have to drive a lot more here.

I personally live in University Park and I love it, I do have to drive ~15 mins to go out though...

How old are you? People in the age range from 24-30 generally go either Uptown/Mckinney or Lower Greenville/Knox Henderson. Deep Ellum is making a comeback too, but I wouldn't suggest living there as it is still pretty ghetto.

Really there are lots of places to do things so just look around and see what area has the stuff you like.

ETA: The popular place to move is West Village, which is nice location wise but pretty expensive. Also the people I know that live there are all sick of the constant noise and difficulty with parking. Lots of younger people though and walking distance to tons of bars and restaurants

Addison or Uptown. I lived in Addison when I first moved to Dallas and it's great, but moved to Uptown to be closer to work/uptown.

I took some advice of younger fraternity brothers who grew up in Plano to move to Addison after i graduated LSU...terrible advice. Addison is like the place people who live in Plano/Mckinney go to eat out/drink. Would not suggest living there if you are under 30.

Uptown, M Streets, Knox/Henderson are all fine choices. If you are living by yourself(no roommate) I'd personally recommend checking out The Village. Good location, tons of young people new to Dallas, cheaper and less hectic and a lot easier to get around than Uptown and only a short cab ride away.

The Village has been around forever, tons of people start out moving there, and figure out exactly where they want to be.

Well he was asking for suggestions of where to live in Dallas, and the suggestion given was to move to Frisco/Mckinney, which are not in Dallas rather different cities all together.

I think people make the mistake of wrapping the whole DFW area into one place, when in reality it is a huge place and moving to Mckinney would put you a solid 20 minutes north of pretty much everything unless you just hung out in Mckinney all the time.

Hell it's 20 minutes from Mckinney to the Shops at Legacy in Plano, and then 20 minute from the Shops to University Park, and then 15 mins from University park to Uptown/Mckinney ave...

If you're in your 20's, Uptown (condos/apartments) or M-Streets/Lower Greenville (houses).

Also, the Henderson area has really taken off. Of course that's borderline M-Streets.

A few years ago, Upper Greenville was more affordable, but not as fun. There was a huge complex area that a lot of young folks lived in. not sure if still the case.

Oaklawn is hip, especially if you're gay, and I assume you are. Plenty of straights live there as well.

Do not live in any suburb.

Too many unknown details from the OP to even begin to give advice. Providing a work locale is the only way to answer questions like this about Dallas. Commute is your FIRST priority. If it's not, it can frick everything else up to where you won't enjoy shite.

Oak Lawn and Medical district are convenient for a commute to Irving. Oak lawn is pretty saturated with homosexuals so just look at the outskirts of that area. That's where we are.

My bf previously had a <600 sq ft 1 BR apt in west village uptown that was over $1300/mo.

The answer is Uptown, if you can afford it. I live on McKinney right now and love it.

I will soon be moving to the Village area. I can save $250/month in rent and I travel 80% of the month, so the value just isn''t there for me to pay so much to live on McKinney. I can take $10 cab rides instead.

If possible, you need to move NOW to get the best rent rates. Rates are about to spike ~$300/month on Mckinney for the summer months. I wish I had been able to work around this, but demand is always the highest in the summer.

I think I have a list of places I considered. Places that come to mind:

ICON on Ross
McKinney Uptown
Post Worthington
A number of town homes near Worthington
Apartments down near Pearl
Other Post properties (they are everywhere)
AMLI at Citiplace
Villas at Katy Trail
Glass House (very expensive)
Gables Katy trail
