A lot of hand sanitizers have isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, not ethyl alcohol.
I would assume what she consumed had ethyl. Six ounces of 140 proof ethyl in a 5 year old could be fatal and even a small amount of isopropyl most certainly would. Sounds like she's lucky to be alive.

When I started school we used to have white paste that smelled like peppermint. That stuff got eaten regularly.

Don’t be disingenuous. There was a bottle of alcohol placed on the desk of a kindergartener that was likely flavored/scented in some way to make it appealing enough to consume.
