Simulated universe

quote:

.
ARE YOU LIVING IN A COMPUTER SIMULATION? BY NICK BOSTROM

[Published in Philosophical Quarterly (2003) Vol. 53, No. 211, pp. 243-255. (First version: 2001" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer">

This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed.

I got into it with a guy at dinner once because he was seriously arguing that the government puts fluoride in the water supply to control the population.
So why do they put fluoride in our water? Also how is this fluoride made that we put into our tap water for the masses?

Take the tin foil hate off man. H20 isn't what your body needs, so lets add some fluoride to the water plus all these other chemicals. Nature got it wrong and the US Gov't knows what the citizens really want in their water.

There is no reason whatsoever to put fluoride or these other chemicals in our water. The gov't ain't putting this shite in there for fun either.

So jet fuel can melt steel now? As a person who melts metal on a daily basis for my job, I can assure you we do not use any type of fuel to do it.

I think it is stupid how people say our man made waste doesn't affect the weather or our environment. They are just as bad as the people who claim that global warming is 100% real and a direct result from the past 100 yrs or so.

I think the answer lies in between. Our waste may not be contributing much to the weather, but I"m sure it does affect it as well as our other actions on the planet.

I also find it funny how people take the TV SHOW Mythbusters as 100% real and the definitive answer.

I've heard people IRL and on the netz use that show to defend their view, etc. Like with the thermate not working for 9/11 show they did. People use that as the final answer in that debate, yet this other engineer was able to pull off a different experiment and get great results showing how affect thermite is at cutting steel beams. LINK

He proves that thermite can melt steel, can cut steel vertically and horizontally and use small quantities (theorized it would take massive amounts).

Wrong, idiot. It's either one way or the other, if you admit that there's room for reasonable debate then you're what's wrong with this country. Now pick a side and start yelling.

And you can trust the US Gov't? I get what you are saying 100% and agree 100%, but most people who say that also want to believe the gov't 100% as well.

I don't think you can trust the gov't as many whistler blowers come out about what the gov't has done. We have seen what laws they have passed limiting our rights and freedoms (patriot act, eminent domain, civil forfeitures, etc). We all know how corrupt the politicians are, yet we never do anything to try and change, other voting for the other party as if that makes a difference.

However I think you can shift through some of the bs blogs and find some good stuff with enough research. When you have experts in the field speaking one way and the govt speaking the other, then things start to look fishy.

But what in the office would increase the temp that much more to metal the beams?

Not the question I asked. As an example, wood ignites at ~500F. But wood burning stoves can easily exceed 1000F. So what would limit the temperature of the burning office building?
