re: Morganza Spillway may or may not open for a 3rd time -- lack of clear info from ACoE

They said the reasoning for opening Morganza was due to water overtopping the floodgates which would result in an uncontrolled water release. The crest date & crest height hasn't changed according to the forecast so this cancelling/postponement is a bit confusing.

This. It has to be a fight behind the scenes going on in terms of opening Morganza behind the set trigger of 1.5 million cfs at the Red River Landing vs the river height at Red River Landing.

I bet they're just waiting to see what the added flooding from today's rainfall in Assumption Parish does before they decide to add even more water to that problem. Only thing I can think of. But if the fear is that the water will overtop the structure then why even take the chance? Open it!

The river was also climbing fast at the Natchez gage, having reached 58 feet, more than ten feet above fl ood stage
I can tell you one thing for absolute certain...if Natchez floods, anyone within about 250 miles of the Mississippi is fricked

It was the Greenville gauge not the memphis gauge and it fell roughly a foot in 12 hours.
Thank you for posting that. I looked all over the archived data trying to find the information.
Reading the link it looks like it fell a little over 6 inches from 1400 to 0300 the next day, then continued to rise. Greenville to Lake Providence is about 50 river miles.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm fairly certain that it is law based on the Flood Control Act of 1954 that Morganza can only be opened at 1.5 million cfs at Red River Landing. The opening in 2011 bypassed that federal legislation. That would be the case again with an opening right now which maybe the hold up if someone with political clout is making a stink about the opening behind the scenes.

I just wish they would explain their reason!
They have. They werent going to open it because it hasnt met the triggers. Then they said they may have to because it will get over topped. Obviously it hasnt been over topped or met the triggers so they keep pushing it back until one of the 3 is immanent

It's odd. It's still 3 days from when they were going to open it. Why rush out a statement without knowing the next projected date? Just wait a day until you know the plan.

Rumors flying after doing some testing they aren't confident the structure can withstand the force of the water going through

Political pressure from interests in the spillway area that would flood.

Sounds like FB rumors similar to the I-10 bridge in LC with large cracks in it

I understanding timing of changes to ACoE standing orders occur in years, not days... but this is going to need to be resolved at some point. If they are not going to dredge to maintain the river heights, then they need to change the standard from cfs to river height.

I drove by there on Monday out of curiosity and it looks like an inland sea on the river side. I can only imagine what it looks like after this morning.

Oh Lord.
I've got a strong suspicion that is a false rumor, but bad to hear nonetheless.
