Man, 19 years is a hell of a run for a cat. Sounds like y’all provided her a happy and healthy life for her to live that long.
As far as the actual experience, I have had to do it several times in my life and it is miserable by its nature. You will be nervous and upset, but the veterinary personnel are used to that and expect it. Honestly, is is suprisingly gentle and peaceful.
One more thing….as I said, I have had to do this several times in my life. In retrospect, 100% of the time, I waited too long
Sorry about your kitty, man.

Fighting these fears with my cat right now, she's only 13 though. Diagnosed with hyperthyroidism early this year and while she's getting her meds it's still been a struggle as she seems to have developed a food/protein allergy as well. She's been down weight and it's killing me.
I've had 2 cats make it into their early 20s but it's never easy to say goodbye.

Here's Rosie, she was my cat I had to put to sleep 8 years ago about nine months before the stroke
Rosie was a neighborhood stray kinda lived with four different families and I was maybe the least visited by Rosie. Then it got cold and no one else was gonna let her stay in their garage so I had her stay in mine but I left the door to the house open while I was getting ready and she just walked inside the house and climbed up on my couch just fall asleep.
Oh, and she just smelled like wet cat- ugh, she stank that first night, but I imagine she was tired so I let her sit there on the couch until I decided to go to sleep and I picked her up and carried her to the door into the garage and got nudged at her with my foot and she just looked up at me and tried to write back to the couch and jumped up on it .
So like that I had a cat. But she was still pretty feral I had to let her out every morning. For that first year she maybe was inside 4 nights a week and that was about it the rest of the time she was still catting around.
And then the neighborhood noticed that she was getting fat
I never even considered getting her fixed
She wasn't my cat
I don't know; that wasn't the relationship. We had never made it official.
And then we noticed she wasn't fat, and we looked around the neighborhood for those kittens for two weeks; we never found them, and it's just, you know, a feral cat. I figured, OK, well, she's gone.
Until a Saturday morning where I woke up walk out my front porch and there she is with two kittens and she immediately runs off and I take the kittens inside, put them behind the couch and then she shows up in the garage with another kitten who we can't catch because these cats are fully eyes open wild kittens.. wild lil frickers. Me and the neighbor chased that little kitten in my garage now, 57 minutes bit the shite out of my neighbor
And then later in the day, just another kitten showed up at the door, meowing at the door, and Rose he's just passed out behind the couch, just dead to the world, asleep- and so now I had a cat and 4 kittens in my life.
And they were not tame,, they tamed quickly, but those little frickers kept attacking him at night,,in the morning i the kitchen,, when Im masturbating,, that was unsettling to be interrupted mid-flogging the donkey. They hid ,, they were stalking me, those frickers, 4 males
One went to a neighbor for his little girl because my wife and I were going through a divorce. She's Gonzo; just left him and the little girl; Willie was his name. I named him. I named all of them,
Pancho and Lefty; they went to the sister ,, single sister
of the neighbors,
And then there was Tard, that stupid cat just wandered around the house with this little toy fish he kept clutched in his mouth and just growling constantly growling. That little special needs cat was my son. That cat was entertaining, quirky as shite, skittish as frick,
I kept Tard.
So there we were me, Rosie and that was the scene for a few years And then Tarred ran away He came back once and then he ran away again. Some people saw him up by the convenience store in the neighborhood. Several people would spot him up there, but I didn't go by there much, and even though I tried calling out to him a few times when I went out there, I just never saw him again.
And then it was just me and Rosie for 8 more years I stayed There would be days multiple days in a row that I would be home at midnight and back out at 7 in the morning and do that 4 nights in a row. And she was fine with it When I was there I left the window open She could just go in and out of the back of the house whenever she wanted that stayed open probably 300 days a year.
And then she slowed down I noticed she was getting skinnier and skinnier She was having trouble getting up on the couch had trouble getting up on the bed so I had to build the staircase for her.
And then she just got real bad real fast.
That last day, I took her with me to the office. It just kept her under my desk. Then I took her home at night and I was planning on just taking her to the in the morning and then she drastically dropped and I rushed to the vet down the road just before they closed and said goodbye to there at the vet.
And like that she was gone.
my Rosie, the longest relationship Ive had my life.
Rosie celebrating the Astros WS ship!!
Times are approximate, to be honest; I didn't trust the math in my head
but frick it
this isn't Jeopardy
