Yeah, I wouldn't take up cycling unless my city had designated bike paths. Even the lane on the side of the road gives me no assurance.

i justify the amount of money i spend on bikes by saying "at least it isn't as expensive as golf".

I justify golf by saying, at least it isn't as expensive as cocaine.

In my case golf unless you play sparingly.

As someone who does both on a constant basis, I say they equal out.

Green fees aren't cheap, but it'll take 60 green fees just to add up to the price of my bike and that doesn't include entry fees.

golfers have a gin/tonic after a round ... bikers have a protein bar ...

So, do you not have clubs or do you just throw the ball down the fairway?

If you golf, at least you might still be manly and people that live in the country won't fricking hate you for blocking their road

That's too healthy.

I have a beer after cycling. And whatever the hell I want to eat Heck, my friends have mountain bikes with beers in their iced up Camelbaks to drink mid ride haha.

a $250 set of second hand clubs versus a $5,000 bike doesn't really equate to the same thing.

Seems you might be a better cyclist that a golfer then.
I've got 33+K on my bike now, figure I average 20 mph, and even if the bike cost me 5K which it didn't, how much per hour did it run me? Not much in the long run.

No doubt.

These cyclists are gonna have prostate cancer too. Gotta figure in the cost of that as well.

If you race you'll have omnium fees, license fees, you'll likely join a team and a couple kits will easily set you back $500 plus maintenance on the bikes and costs for hotels to travel and spare wheelsets, power meter is $2000, etc

Most racers have a coach and that will cost another $200+/mo

I suck at both of them, but I can justify an expensive sub 16 pound bike easier than justifying hockey sticks that i stab in the mud on a regular basis.

Sorry I must have missed that in the OP's post. Did he also mention entering golf tourneys and maybe the Open?

Have you seen how much new bikes run? Over 10k.

I'd kick my own arse if I spent 10k on a bicycle

Reread your OP, sorry. While I agree you can spend money on being in races, top of the line gear, etc., most cyclist don't. Like most golfers they are just getting exercise and enjoying the outdoors.
I don't play golf, but do you have to enter tourneys in order to have fun?

Know a few competitive, national level amateur racers, those guys probably spend 7-10 grand a year on training, parts, travel, and SHIPPING bike stuff all over the country, that adds up.

That said a nationally competitive amateur golfer that plays one or two tournaments a month probably spends the same or more money.

I've seen rims that supposedly cost 2500$, where in NOLA would you feel comfortable riding on them? Seriously, and how much more speed will they get you?
