Dumb shite still happens. There's isn't a physics department at an accredited university in the USA who couldn't figure out how to put a man on the moon these days.
Like I said earlier, I don't want to oversimplify this because it is not simple, but it is just a physics problem. Executing it is an economics problem. Any country willing to spend the money could successfully do it by 2025 if they started today. The few who do have the economical horsepower for it don't have the desire to do it.

Guys and gals who could move mountains with a brain and pencil are not dorks! Also, that is the generation of men who went up Normandy Beach. Also, their mothers had the guts to watch their sons die for a worthy cause.

Right. Those were definitely not dorks. They were just extremely smart men.
Men didn't grow up with video games back then. They grew up with parents who survived the depression, who fought 2 world wars, the list goes on and on.
As someone else mentioned, nazi scientists, communist defectors, and other assorted brainiacs also played a huge role in figuring it out. The ground level execution was some Marlboro smoking slide rule using frickin men.
That was peak alpha united States. frick you soviet union, we have the biggest dick on this planet and we're going to prove it and we did.

Strange how scientists with today's modern technology aren't sure if we can pull it off again, or even exactly how to do it.
We know we can pull it off again. The low gravity of the moon makes for a much easier landing to make with much less fuel needed. Mars will be a lot different.
The difference is there was no funding or reason to keep going to the moon after the landings. General population lost interest and there were not strategic reasons for continuing.
Now that there are cheaper launch alternatives (see SpaceX and Vulcan) private companies now have their eyes set on the moon as a step towards Mars. Peregrine unfortunately wont be making a landing with their mishap and loss of propellant, but things are going to pick up fast.

Horse shite. We can absolutely do it.
We have had no reason to do it so no serious capital and resource commitment has been made until now. The only reason we pushed so hard for it 50 years ago was to beat the Russians there. It was an ego thing.

These Men .
These Men had Balls of Steel. All were fighter jet pilots with thousands of hours of flight time. Many with actual combat flight time. They were capable of solving unforeseen problems while flying. I fear that many of our new astronauts do not have these qualifications , relying to much on digital fly by wire and back up computers to 'fly' a spacecraft. How many many of these new astronauts have seen a dead pilot , charred beyond recognition ? How many have had to make a split second decision that will affect the lives of 4 other astronauts ?
