Two-time All-American football player and NFL star, but more importantly a local hero. On June 29, 1983, former Kansas City Chief’s running back, Joe Delaney, didn’t hesitate to jump into a pond to save three kids screaming for help…despite not being able to swim himself. Delaney and two of the young kids drowned that day.

Joe Delaney was the AFC Rookie of the Year in 1981, and died just 2 years later trying to save the lives of two drowning children near a water park in Monroe, Louisiana.

Maybe in 100 years itll be toppled by protesters because he disturbed a natural ecosystem in doing the act

I don't think I could have made that decision if I knew I couldn't swim.

And Gary Reasons. You’d be hard pressed to find a FCS program with four guys who went on to such success.

An incredibly selfless act that should be remembered.

Okay I’m sorry I get what you’re saying and you’re right.

But how bad is it that you read this and this was your first thought? Think about it for a second

This is what I mean when I say our country is fricked from both sides. Politics (something that should be unifying in terms of figuring out how to make OUR {yes all of us, republican/Democrat/independent alike} country better) has become so divisive that we read a story about a guy that had everything giving up his life to save some kids and this is our first reaction.

This isn’t directed towards you necessarily, SEClint. Just a general comment.

On another note.

I used to run there all the time when I was in college. Wish I could be there to see it.

Buck Buchanan ( HOF)
Willie Brown( HOF)
Ernie Ladd( AfL HOf would be NFL ,but retired early)
Garland Boyette( 2x Pro Bowl)
Rosey Taylor ( 1x All Pro / 2x pro bowl)

All defensive teamates at Grambling.

Selfless act by Delaney. Statues are ridiculous ,but a small monument in a park is fine by me.

A little LSU connection.

Joe Delaney was Terrace Marshall's great uncle. His mom's uncle.

Horrible tragedy. That was old critter’s creek where they had water slides back then to the left of the golf course entrance street.

No question, it was a horrible tragedy. Delaney sacrificed his life trying to save those kids. He had to know his efforts were a longshot, and he’d likely wind up losing his own life, but he went in anyway. A selfless hero.

What is it with black folks and learning how to swim? LEARN HOW TO SWIM! MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS CAN SWIM!

There's an oft joked about stereotype that they're incapable is swimming.

For those who believe it, it becomes self fulfilling.

Truly sad. That is exactly where my mind went. Was the boys white or black? If they were white tear it down.

Worst part about it from what I’ve heard is that at least one of the people he gave his life to save went on to live a life full of crime. Selfless act by a hero.

I appreciate your yelling, but I doubt it will find it’s way through to its target audience. As for Delaney.....

I remember how terrified I was when I couldn't swim.

That makes me in awe of Joe Delaney. He should be mentioned in history classes. What he did was Medal of Honor level bravery.

Muscle doesn't float. I am sure that didn't help. He may not have realized it but he jumped in not knowing how to swim with the equivalent of a weight tied to him. If you cannot swim and you do not float you don't have a chance unless someone else can help you out.
